Chippewas back after bye week

Central Michigan (3-3, 1-1 in MAC play) will hope its bye week invigorates the team after a mixed start to the 2025 season. The Chippewas sit at .500 after six games despite opening with one of the weakest schedules in college football, losing heavily in both games against top-100 teams in the shape of Pittsburgh and Michigan. They opened their MAC schedule by beating Eastern Michigan 24-13 and then went down as the favorite to Akron last time out on October 4, losing 28-22 in front of their own fans to drop back to 1-1 in conference play.

Running back Brock Townsend was one of the few high points for Central Michigan in that loss. Townsend picked up 108 rushing yards on eight carries to average 13.5 yards/carry. The redshirt freshman is emerging as a star in the Chippewas' run-heavy offense and now has 159 yards on the ground in the team's two MAC games, having barely featured to open the season. Angel Flores is also making a case to start at quarterback thanks to his talent on the ground. Flores now has 384 rushing yards and four TDs in a season where he is splitting field time with Joey Labas, while also picking up two passing TDs and no interceptions. Labas struggled against Akron, completing 12 of 21 attempts through the air while getting sacked four times.

Labas is completing 69.9% of his passes for 694 yards with five TDs and a pick. The offense overall is very pedestrian, ranking 107th in yards per game (337.5) and 103rd in yards per play at 5.2. On defense, they allow 381.8 yards per game (86th) and 4,5 yards per rush (102nd).

Falcons off the mark in MAC

Bowling Green (3-3, 1-1 in MAC play) sits at .500 in the Mid-American Conference after back-to-back hard-fought games against two of the Falcons' in-state rivals. The Falcons were outmuscled 35-20 in their conference opener against Ohio at the end of September, but came back strong after a bye week and beat Toledo 28-23 due to a remarkable comeback. Bowling Green trailed 21-0 with less than two minutes on the clock in the second quarter but came back to score four touchdowns without a reply and take the game.

Cameron Pettaway was the Falcons' hero. The running back caught only two passes, but he made them count, taking a screen pass from Lucian Anderson 45 yards into the endzone and then running in a 73-yard completion from R.J. Garcia in the second half to tie the game at 21-21. Those two completions accounted for 118 of the Falcons' 165 passing yards on Saturday as their offense struggled without first-string QB Drew Pyne, who was forced to sit with an undisclosed injury. Pyne remains a doubt for Saturday's game. They had just 10 first downs and 226 total yards, but managed to win because the Rockets committed 13 penalties for 109 yards

The Falcons average just 306.5 yards per game (127th) and 165.8 passing yards (122nd). The defense allows 139.8 yards per game on the ground (61st) and 238.3 passing yards (94th).

They were aided on defense by a huge game from the wonderfully named Gideon ESPN Lampron, who built up a hefty highlight reel against Toledo with 13 total tackles (10 solo) and 3.5 tackles for loss and earned the MAC's Co-Defensive Player of the Week honor. The linebacker ranks third in the conference this year with 32 solo tackles and eight tackles for loss.

Central Michigan vs. Bowling Green pick

Spread Pick for Central Michigan vs. Bowling Green

  • Bowling Green -4.5 (5 units)

I like Bowling Green here. Central Michigan has been dreadful on the road in recent seasons and has shown no sign of changing that, making a comfortable home win the logical choice for Saturday. The Chippewas are 1-3 ATS away from home so far in 2025 after going 1-4-1 last season. They have one win in their last 14 road games. The Falcons are 4-2 ATS this year and 2-1 playing at home. Their defense stands up better against the rush and that is good news against a Central Michigan team that runs more than almost any other Division I program.

Take the Falcons.

Over/Under Pick for Central Michigan vs. Bowling Green

  • Over 43 (5 units)

While these two teams are far from the best offensive units in college football, I am backing them to hit the over on Saturday, above all due to Central Michigan's fragility when traveling. The Chippewas have shipped an average of 34.25 points per game playing on the road in 2025 and are 3-1 on the over when playing away from home. Bowling Green is 4-2 on the over this season and 2-0 in conference play.

Take the over.
