Central Michigan Has Found Its Identity on the Ground

Central Michigan’s season began poorly with a 38-7 road loss to New Mexico, but the Chippewas have responded with consecutive victories. Their latest performance was particularly encouraging, as Central Michigan beat Wyoming 24-10 and improved to 2-1. The Chippewas led 17-0 at halftime and 24-3 after three quarters before allowing a late touchdown.

Central Michigan’s success against Wyoming was built around its rushing attack. The Chippewas generated 163 rushing yards from quarterback Angel Flores alone, while the passing game contributed very little. That style can shorten games and help an underdog limit possessions, but becoming one-dimensional against Miami creates obvious concerns. The Hurricanes have the athleticism to load the box and force Central Michigan into uncomfortable passing situations.

The Chippewas’ best chance is to make this a possession game rather than a track meet. They need sustained rushing drives, a clean turnover margin and enough defensive resistance to keep Miami from establishing a three-score lead before halftime. Central Michigan has improved substantially since its season-opening loss, but the athletic jump from Wyoming to Miami is enormous.

Miami Continues to Produce at a National Level

Miami has opened 3-0 with victories over Stanford, Florida A&M and Wake ForeState The Hurricanes beat Stanford 45-6, overwhelmed Florida A&M 77-7 and then went on the road for a 33-20 conference victory against Wake ForeState Miami has therefore scored 155 points through three games while allowing only 33.

The Wake Forest game was more competitive than Miami’s first two, which could actually benefit the Hurricanes entering this matchup. Miami built a large early advantage before Wake Forest made a second-half push, forcing the Hurricanes to execute in meaningful late-game situations rather than cruising through another blowout. Miami responded and closed out the 13-point road victory.

Central Michigan’s run-heavy approach may shorten portions of this game, but Miami’s offensive explosiveness creates a serious problem. The Hurricanes can create separation quickly, and Central Michigan will struggle to catch up if forced out of its preferred rushing identity. Miami also returns home for Family Weekend and the program’s 1991 national championship celebration, adding another layer to what should be an energized environment.

Central Michigan deserves credit for improving to 2-1, but Miami represents a massive increase in competition. The Hurricanes have scored 45, 77 and 33 points while Central Michigan was beaten 38-7 by New Mexico in its previous road game. Miami’s ability to force the Chippewas away from their rushing identity should eventually create separation. I would back the Hurricanes below four touchdowns.

Pick: Under 57.5 or Higher

Central Michigan’s best strategy is to slow the game with its rushing attack and reduce Miami’s total possessions. Miami could still score into the forties, but the question is whether Central Michigan can contribute enough offense against the Hurricanes’ defense. The Chippewas scored only seven at New Mexico, and Miami has allowed 13 combined points in its two games against Stanford and Florida A&M. At 57.5 or higher, the under carries some value.
