49ers Continue To Reel
Charlotte held the lead over North Texas after one quarter of play, but the 49ers did little else, scoring just three second-half points and losing 54-20. Grayson Loftis operated at a serviceable level, throwing for 295 yards and two scores on 20/36 passing. He connected with five different receivers multiple times, and Javen Nicholas remains his preferred target. Nicholas corralled seven catches for 187 yards and two scores. Charlotte allowed over 750 yards of offense, but generated nearly 400. The defense forced two turnovers.
Charlotte enters this contest averaging 14 points per game, which lands them at the bottom of college football. With fewer than 300 total offensive yards per game, the 49ers have one of the most inefficient offenses in college football. Moreover, they are moving the sticks on roughly just a third of their 3rd down tries, and the 49ers enter this week with the weakest red zone scoring percentage in the nation. The running game hasn't been all that effective as the 49ers are generating fewer than 100 ground yards per contest. Along with that, the offensive line has done little to keep pressure out of the backfield.
Key Team Stats:
- Total Yards Per Game: 291
- 3rd-Down Conversion Rate: 35.85%
- Red Zone Scoring Rate: 66.67%
On the defensive end of the field, Charlotte is allowing 37.6 points per game, which lands them at 126 in America. The 49ers have yet to show they can slow opponents down, as they are giving up over 480 yards per game. On 3rd downs, the defense often finds itself remaining on the field as foes are moving the chains on 43% of their 3rd down tries. Even with opponents running against Charlotte at the highest rate in the country, the 49ers are giving up nearly 5.5 yards per carry and over 230 ground yards per game. The pass rush has been virtually nonexistent, and chunk plays are happening on a much too frequent basis.

Pirates Seek 3rd Straight Win
East Carolina continued to show why they can compete for the top spot in the American Conference. Most recently, they topped Temple in a 45-14 final. The Pirates were led by Katin Houser, who tossed for 256 yards, two scores, and an interception on 19/24 passing. Houser connected with five different receivers on the day. Yannick Smith led the receiving room with five catches for 100 yards and two scores. The defense came away with two sacks and two turnovers as they held Temple to just 233 yards while the ECU offense put up 614.
ECU enters this contest averaging 28.7 points per game, which ranks them right outside the top 50 in football. The Pirates have been able to move the ball down the field as they are generating nearly 470 yards of offense per game. In fact, at 5.9 yards per play, ECU is one of the more efficient offenses in the country and arguably the most efficient in the AAC. They've moved the sticks on roughly 50% of their 3rd down tries, but the offense has often stalled out in the red zone. The Pirates tend to lean on the ground game, which is getting them about 4.5 yards per carry and 190 yards per game. Through the air, the offensive line has been great in terms of protection, and ECU sits top 40 in air yards per throw, completion percentage, and passing yards per game.
Key Team Stats:
- Total Yards Per Game: 466.7
- 3rd-Down Conversion Rate: 49.07%
- Red Zone Scoring Rate: 78.57%
Defensively, East Carolina is allowing 18.7 points per game, which ranks them at 18th in the nation. The Pirates are holding opponents to just over five yards per play. The defense has answered the call where it matters: on 3rd down and in the red zone. ECU sits top 20 in opponent 3rd down conversion rate, and the defense boasts a top 10 ranking when it comes to opponent scoring success in the red zone. They've held opponents to fewer than 3.5 yards per carry, but the secondary has been prone to giving up chunk plays at times this season.
Charlotte vs East Carolina Pick
Spread Pick for Charlotte vs ECU
- ECU -28.5 (4 Units)
Despite getting off to a hot start, Charlotte was unable to hang with North Texas. What is arguably most concerning is the fact that the defense gave up over 800 yards. With ECU generating nearly six yards per play and with an offense that sits in the top 25 in rush yards per game, even if ECU jumps to a large lead, they should still have no trouble moving the ball. Charlotte has struggled immensely in the red zone and on 3rd down and the ECU red zone defense could potentially allow no touchdowns here. Take the home chalk.
East Carolina -28.5
Total Pick for Charlotte vs ECU
- Over 56.5
Charlotte has allowed 49 or more in three of its last four games, and we really shouldn't expect much different here, as ECU is averaging just under 30 points per game. The Charlotte defense is possibly the worst in the nation, and there is little reason to think a conference rival wouldn't put points on the board, given the opportunity. Loftis has been a serviceable quarterback, and Charlotte should be able to move the ball through the air here against the ECU secondary. There is always the fear that Charlotte may not be able to contribute its share, but we should expect ECU to pick up the slack.
