We have an exciting Sun Belt Conference - East Division game in Week 8 of the college football season as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will be heading to Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina, on Saturday afternoon to face off against the App State Mountaineers in our Chanticleers vs. Mountaineers prediction. The game will be airing on ESPN+ and this game is going to be exciting as they are playing well. The Chanticleers (3-3, 2-1 Sun Belt) are coming off a 23-8 home win over the UL Monroe Warhawks on Saturday. The Mountaineers (4-2, 1-1) are on a two-game winning streak as they won on Saturday on the road against the Georgia State Panthers 41-20. Rivalries, tempo, trenches β€” NCAAF picks for Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs. App State Mountaineers.

Chanticleers Looking to Get Over .500

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers have gotten off to a mediocre start of the season as they are 3-3 (2-1 Sun Belt) heading into this game and need to improve in conference play if they want to be in the conference championship game at the end of the season. The Chanticleers’ offense has been terrible as they are averaging 14.7 points per game, ranking 133rd in the country thus far. Quarterback Tad Hudson has been the quarterback seeing the most action in a rotating trio of quarterbacks as he has completed 56-of-103 (54.4%) of his passes for 447 yards with three passing touchdowns to three interceptions while also adding 29 carries for 25 yards (0.9 yards per attempt) with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Running back Ja’Vin Simpkins has been stepping up this year as he leads the program with 52 rushing attempts for 295 yards (5.7 yards per carry) with two rushing touchdowns while also posting seven receptions for seven yards (1.0 yards per catch) entering this game.

In their win over ULM, the Chants used two quarterbacks: Hudson (2-3 for 18 yds) and Samari Collier (5 for 15, 37 yds, 1 TD, 86 yds rushing, 1 TD). Collier has not played all season, but the senior, who began his career at Illinois, does provide some running ability.

The defense of the Chanticleers has been struggling to get stops consistently, as they are tied for 87th in college football as they are giving up 26.8 points per game.Β  The Chants allow 188.3 yards on the ground to rank 122nd in the nation and 409.7 yards per game overall to rank 114th.

Mountaineers Looking to Keep Playing Well

The App State Mountaineers have been playing well up to this point of the season. They won on the road against the Georgia State Panthers 41-20 last time out. They are 83rd in the sport with 26.3 points per game scored. Quarterback JJ Kohl has been holding his own so far as he has completed 36-of-64 (56.3%) of his passes for 563 yards with five passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. Running back Rashod Dubinion has been a force on the ground as well as he has 119 rushing attempts for 667 yards (5.6 yards per carry) with three rushing touchdowns, as well as nine catches for 65 yards (7.2 yards per reception) without finding the end zone.

The defense for the Mountaineers has been playing at a middling level as they are giving up 25.3 points per game, which is 76th in college football as well. They struggle against the pass, allowing 270 yards per game (128th), but are great against the run, allowing 81.5 yards per contest to rank sixth. Their defense has been able to get the opposing offense feeling pressure as they have 15 sacks, 25 pass deflections, seven interceptions, seven forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

Injury Report for App State

  • Wide receiver Chris Lawson Jr: Undisclosed (Questionable)
  • Running back Kanye Roberts: Knee (OUT)

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs. App State Mountaineers Pick

Spread Pick for Coastal Carolina vs. App State

  • App State Mountaineers -10.5 (4 units)

This App State offense has been a more consistent offensive team and should be able to dominate. They are healthy entering this game and have been able to run the ball effectively with 4.1 yards per carry and seven rushing touchdowns this season. On the other side, Coastal Carolina has struggled to find a consistent passing game, as they have four passing touchdowns to seven interceptions this season between their three quarterbacks. The Chanticleers' offensive line is also struggling to protect, as they have allowed 15 sacks this season, so go with the App State Mountaineers to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Coastal Carolina vs. App State

  • Under 50.5 (4 units)

This one was a bit more difficult as this number feels right for these teams, given how they have been playing. These defenses have stepped up as last week, they allowed a combined 28 points and look like they are trending in the right direction. On the offensive side, neither team is completing enough passes consistently as the Chanticleers are 130th with a 53.7 completion percentage, while the Mountaineers are 120th with a 57.0 completion percentage so far. In their eight games they have played against each other all-time (since 2017), the under is 5-3, including the previous four games so go with under 50.5 total points to be scored.
