Coastal Carolina Has Already Been Tested on the Road

Coastal Carolina's opening 31-24 loss at West Virginia was more encouraging than the final result might suggest. The Chanticleers entered as a sizable underdog and stayed within one possession against a Power Four opponent on the road. That performance provides useful evidence entering another road assignment.

The Chanticleers also showed late last season that they could produce offensively. Coastal scored at least 40 points in four different games during a five-game stretch, although defensive inconsistency repeatedly prevented that offense from translating into victories.

That creates the primary question in Newark. Coastal should have opportunities to move the football, but the Chanticleers need their defense to prevent Delaware from establishing control. If Coastal can reproduce the competitiveness it showed at West Virginia, this matchup should remain close deep into the second half.

Delaware Gets a Valuable Home Opportunity

Delaware began 2026 with a convincing 42-7 victory over Merrimack. The Blue Hens entered the season after finishing 2025 strongly, including a 61-31 victory over UTEP and a 20-13 win over Louisiana in their final two games.

The question is whether Delaware deserves to be substantially favored. Coastal's performance at West Virginia demonstrated that the Chanticleers are capable of competing with stronger opposition.
