Coastal Carolina turns it on late
Coastal Carolina (2-2, 1-0 in Sun Belt) has been solid rather than spectacular in these opening weeks of the NCAAF season. The Chanticleers didn't look like much in blowout defeats at the hands of Virginia and East Carolina, losing by a combined scoreline of 86-7 over the two games, while a 13-0 win over FCS Charleston Southern was hardly encouraging either for the program in its 2025 home debut. But they managed to get it together right in time for the start of the Sun Belt season, overpowering favorite South Alabama 38-20 on the road.
A remarkable second-half turnaround delivered the win: Coastal Carolina outscored the Jaguars 31-6 after halftime, with QB Tad Hudson throwing two touchdowns. Hudson completed 13-25 passing attempts for 112 yards. The Chanticleers' defense forced five fumbles and three turnovers, with DE Noah Arinze (2 sacks, 2 TFL) standing out, forcing a fumble which ended in a defensive touchdown for the visitors. He was rewarded with the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week award for his efforts. RB Ja'Vin Simpkins also had a big game with 84 rushing yards off nine carries and a TD.

Monarchs turning heads
The Old Dominion Monarchs (3-1) begin their Sun Belt season this Saturday on a high after a string of eye-catching results. Predicted to finish fifth in the East division of the conference in preseason, OD started 2025 with an encouraging 27-14 loss to No. 20 Indiana (now ranked No. 8) and followed that up with three straight wins, a blowout over North Carolina Central, followed by a huge upset against Virginia Tech and a win over Liberty. It is the first time since 2014 that the Monarchs have started a year with a 3-1 record.
ODU has been impressive on both sides of the ball. It leads Sun Belt teams with an average of 468 yards per game on offense, while last time out against Liberty, the Monarchs restricted the Flames to just 210 yards and a single score. Quarterback Colton Joseph completed 18-26 attempts for 271 yards, three TDs and an INT while Liberty's Michael Merdinger landed just six passes for a total of 77 yards, 53 of which came on the program's only touchdown of the day with ODU already 21 points up. Having rested in Week 5 the Monarchs will be looking for a strong start to the conference schedule and go in as heavy favorites against Coastal Carolina.
Coastal Carolina vs. Old Dominion pick
Spread Pick for Coastal Carolina vs. Old Dominion
- Coastal Carolina +20.5 (4 units)
As good as ODU has been so far in 2025, this is a huge spread to cover, and I can't see the Monarchs keeping up the intensity to finish three scores ahead if they are already on the way to victory early on. ODU went 1-3 ATS last year as a favorite and 2-4 playing at home: it is 1-1 so far this year playing as a home favorite after failing to cover against Liberty. Coastal Carolina has been a thorn in the Monarchs' side in seasons past and has won the last two games between these two Sun Belt rivals. The Chanticleers will hope to take advantage against an offense that, despite its impressive play, has been making too many mistakes: ODU averages 2.7 giveaways per game, ranking 132nd among FBS teams. They probably won't win, but if the underdog can capitalize on those errors, it has a great chance to cover this generous spread.
Take the Chanticleers.
Over/Under Pick for Coastal Carolina vs. Old Dominion
- Under 54 (5 units)
I think the under is the smart choice here. ODU's offense is based around the running game, with almost 60% of its plays coming on the ground so far this season. Coastal Carolina has been vulnerable without the ball, but it stands up pretty well against the rush, limiting teams to 4.3 yards per carry. The Chanticleers have been scored on in 72.2% of red zone attempts, the 15th-best record in college football. On the other side, except for that late explosion against South Alabama, scoring has been a big problem. Coastal Carolina averages 15.0 points per game to place 118th among FBS teams. The team has gone 1-2-1 on the over so far this year.
Take the under.
