College Football Picks for Saturday, October 17, 2026
Saturday’s college football schedule features several major conference matchups, including Alabama at Tennessee, Ohio State at Indiana, Penn State at Michigan, and Notre Dame at BYU. We’re focusing on 23 selected games, with one wager from each matchup and an examination of how the betting lines have moved during the week.
The betting market has made some strong statements. Alabama has gained support against Tennessee, Texas Tech is now favored by more than two touchdowns against Arizona State, and Oregon State’s spread against Washington State has climbed by more than four points. Those movements can tell us where money is going, but they don’t automatically mean the favorite is the right side. For more football predictions, check out our free college football picks.
Alabama vs. Tennessee Best Bet
Alabama heads to Knoxville as a seven-and-a-half-point favorite after opening around -5.5. The total has fallen even more dramatically, dropping from 56.5 to approximately 51. The Crimson Tide have attracted support, but Tennessee now gets more than a touchdown at Neyland Stadium. That’s a meaningful difference in a rivalry game.
Best Bet: Tennessee +7.5
Alabama may be the better team, but the market has already adjusted considerably in its favor. Tennessee has home field and enough offensive ability to stay competitive if it avoids turnovers. I’ll take the Volunteers with the hook above seven rather than chase Alabama after the move.
CFB Best Bet: Tennessee +7.5
Arizona State vs. Texas Tech Best Bet
Texas Tech opened as a 12.5-point favorite and has climbed to -15.5. The total has barely moved, sitting around 50 points. That’s an important combination because the market expects a comfortable Texas Tech victory without substantially increasing the projected scoring.
Best Bet: Arizona State +15.5
Texas Tech deserves to be favored, but laying more than two touchdowns creates considerable risk. Arizona State doesn’t need to win or even threaten an upset to cover this number. The Sun Devils need to limit turnovers and avoid giving Texas Tech easy possessions. I’ll take the points after the market’s three-point move.
CFB Best Bet: Arizona State +15.5
Auburn vs. Georgia Best Bet
Georgia is favored by 19.5 points after opening at -18.5, while the total has fallen from 50.5 to 49.5. The Bulldogs have the stronger overall team, but the market is asking them to win by nearly three touchdowns against an SEC opponent.
Best Bet: Under 49.5 Points
Georgia’s defense should be capable of making Auburn work for every scoring opportunity. The concern is that the Bulldogs could create short fields through turnovers and score quickly. Still, with Georgia favored by almost 20 points and the total below 50, a controlled game in which the favorite relies on its defense looks plausible.
CFB Best Bet: Auburn-Georgia Under 49.5
FAU vs. Army Best Bet
Army is a slight home favorite at -2.5 after opening around -3. The total has dropped from 55.5 to 54.5. This is one of the closer matchups on the board, and Army’s ability to control possession could become especially important if Florida Atlantic struggles to get defensive stops.
Best Bet: Army -2.5
I prefer Army laying less than a field goal at Michie Stadium. The Black Knights can shorten the game through their rushing attack and limit Florida Atlantic’s possessions. FAU has enough offensive ability to make this competitive, but Army’s preferred style gives the home team a reasonable path to a narrow victory.
CFB Best Bet: Army -2.5
Florida State vs. Miami (FL) Best Bet
Miami is favored by approximately 21.5 points after opening at -20.5. The total has edged upward from 55.5 to 56.5. The Hurricanes have been one of the stronger teams in the country, while Florida State has struggled against quality competition.
Best Bet: Miami -21.5
Three touchdowns is a substantial spread in a rivalry game, but Miami has the stronger overall profile and home-field advantage. Florida State needs to avoid falling behind early because chasing the game would expose its defense to even more pressure. Miami has enough offensive production to build a comfortable lead, although late substitutions are a concern with a spread this large.
CFB Best Bet: Miami -21.5
Florida vs. Texas Best Bet
Texas has moved from approximately -9.5 to -11.5, while the total has fallen from 53.5 to 51.5. The Longhorns are expected to control this matchup at home, but the combination of a larger spread and lower total makes taking the points more appealing.
Best Bet: Florida +11.5
Florida doesn’t need to match Texas offensively for four quarters to cover. The Gators need to avoid turnovers and make the Longhorns sustain drives rather than giving them short fields. Texas is the more likely winner, but getting more than ten points in a game with a declining total offers the better betting position.
CFB Best Bet: Florida +11.5
Louisville vs. Syracuse Best Bet
Louisville has received substantial support, moving from approximately -11.5 to -15.5. The total has held near 55.5. The Cardinals are coming off a convincing 44-20 victory over Florida State, while Syracuse has struggled through the opening portion of its ACC schedule.
Best Bet: Louisville -15.5
Louisville has demonstrated the ability to create explosive offensive plays, and Syracuse hasn’t consistently prevented opponents from moving the football. The concern is that the market has already added four points to the spread. Still, the Cardinals have the stronger offensive profile and should be able to create separation if they avoid giving Syracuse extra possessions.
CFB Best Bet: Louisville -15.5
Mississippi State vs. LSU Best Bet
LSU has moved from a 12-point favorite to approximately -15.5, while the total has declined from 59.5 to 57. The Tigers have home-field advantage and the stronger defensive outlook, but the spread has become considerably more expensive.
Best Bet: Under 57 Points
LSU should be able to make Mississippi State work for its scoring opportunities, particularly if the Tigers control the line of scrimmage. The concern is that LSU could score enough on its own to threaten the total. Still, the downward movement suggests expectations for a more controlled game, and I prefer the under to laying more than two touchdowns.
CFB Best Bet: Mississippi State-LSU Under 57
Missouri vs. Ole Miss Best Bet
Missouri enters at 5-1 after beating Texas A&M 27-6, while Ole Miss is 4-1 following a 52-17 victory over Vanderbilt. The Rebels opened as approximately 6.5-point favorites, but the spread has moved toward Missouri and now sits around 5.5. The total has climbed to 58.5.
Best Bet: Missouri +5.5
Missouri’s defensive performance against Texas A&M deserves attention. The Tigers have demonstrated they can limit a quality opponent, and getting more than a field goal against Ole Miss creates an opportunity. The Rebels are dangerous offensively, especially at home, but Missouri has enough defensive ability to keep this within one possession.
CFB Best Bet: Missouri +5.5
Nebraska vs. Oregon Best Bet
Oregon is favored by approximately seven points, down slightly from an opening number around 7.5. The moneyline market has moved much more noticeably toward Nebraska, indicating increased respect for the underdog. The total has edged upward to 51.5.
Best Bet: Nebraska +7
Oregon has the stronger home-field advantage, but Nebraska has attracted enough support to make the full touchdown interesting. The Cornhuskers need to avoid explosive plays and keep the game within reach entering the fourth quarter. Oregon could pull away if Nebraska struggles offensively, but I’ll take the touchdown in a matchup the market now sees as more competitive.
CFB Best Bet: Nebraska +7
Notre Dame vs. BYU Best Bet
Notre Dame opened as approximately a 12.5-point favorite, but that number has fallen to 10.5. The total has also declined from 48.5 to 46.5. BYU gets home field in a game where the market expects fewer points than it did earlier in the week.
Best Bet: BYU +10.5
Notre Dame deserves to be favored, but winning by more than ten points in Provo is a substantial assignment. BYU can make this difficult if its defense limits explosive plays and forces the Irish to sustain long drives. The lower total also makes a double-digit spread more attractive for the underdog. I’ll take BYU with the points.
CFB Best Bet: BYU +10.5
Ohio State vs. Indiana Best Bet
Ohio State opened as approximately a 2.5-point favorite and has moved to -3.5. The total has climbed from 48.5 to 50.5. Indiana gets home field against one of the country’s strongest programs, but the Buckeyes have attracted enough support to move the spread across the key number of three.
Best Bet: Indiana +3.5
Ohio State has the stronger reputation and deserves respect, but Indiana getting more than a field goal at home is appealing. The Hoosiers don’t need to win outright to cover, and a competitive fourth quarter could be enough. The Buckeyes have the ability to take control through their defense, but I prefer Indiana with the hook rather than laying points after the move.
CFB Best Bet: Indiana +3.5
Oklahoma State vs. Houston Best Bet
Houston opened around -3.5 and has moved to -4.5, while the total has jumped from 57.5 to 62.5. That’s one of the more notable total movements among Saturday’s selected games. The market expects considerably more offense than it did earlier in the week.
Best Bet: Under 62.5 Points
The total has climbed five points, and that creates an opportunity to take the other side of the move. Houston and Oklahoma State both have enough offensive ability to score, but asking the teams to combine for 63 points is a substantial expectation. The danger is that defensive mistakes create quick touchdowns. Still, I prefer the under at the inflated number.
CFB Best Bet: Oklahoma State-Houston Under 62.5
Penn State vs. Michigan Best Bet
Michigan opened as approximately a six-point favorite and has moved to -7. The total has fallen from 44.5 to 42.5, suggesting expectations for a physical, lower-scoring Big Ten matchup. Both teams have enough defensive ability to prevent this from becoming an offensive showcase.
Best Bet: Under 42.5 Points
Michigan’s home-field advantage makes the Wolverines the preferred winner, but a seven-point spread is uncomfortable in a game with a total this low. Both defenses should be capable of forcing punts and limiting explosive plays. A game decided in the low 20s looks reasonable, making the under more attractive than laying a touchdown.
CFB Best Bet: Penn State-Michigan Under 42.5
Utah vs. Colorado Best Bet
Utah is favored by approximately 15.5 points after opening at -14.5. The total has slipped from 50.5 to 49.5. The Utes have the stronger overall profile, but Colorado gets home field and more than two touchdowns.
Best Bet: Colorado +15.5
Utah should control significant stretches of this game, but the spread has become large enough to consider Colorado. The Buffaloes need to avoid turnovers and prevent the Utes from creating easy scoring opportunities. Utah could win comfortably without covering 15.5, particularly if the game stays relatively low scoring.
CFB Best Bet: Colorado +15.5
Virginia vs. SMU Best Bet
SMU opened as approximately a 6.5-point favorite and has climbed to -9.5. The total has dropped from 54.5 to 51.5. The Mustangs have received significant support, but the market now requires them to win by double digits to cover.
Best Bet: Virginia +9.5
Virginia is the preferred side at the current number. SMU has enough offensive ability to win, but laying nearly ten points is a different proposition than the opening spread. The declining total makes each point more valuable, and Virginia has a reasonable opportunity to stay within one possession if it avoids costly turnovers.
CFB Best Bet: Virginia +9.5
The Citadel vs. Texas A&M Best Bet
Texas A&M is favored by approximately 45.5 points against The Citadel, an FCS opponent. The spread hasn’t moved significantly, while the total has edged upward to 56.5. Texas A&M has a considerable talent advantage, but the size of the spread makes the final margin difficult to predict.
Best Bet: The Citadel +45.5
The Aggies should win comfortably, but covering more than six touchdowns requires a sustained scoring effort. Texas A&M could rotate reserves with a large lead, creating opportunities for The Citadel to keep the final margin inside the number. The danger is an early avalanche of turnovers and short fields. Still, I’ll take the enormous underdog spread rather than ask Texas A&M to win by 46.
CFB Best Bet: The Citadel +45.5
Northern Illinois vs. Wyoming Best Bet
Wyoming opened around -7 and has moved to -7.5. The total has increased slightly to 41.5. The Cowboys have home field, but the low total suggests neither offense is expected to generate much scoring.
Best Bet: Northern Illinois +7.5
Getting more than a touchdown in a game with a total of 41.5 is attractive. Northern Illinois doesn’t need much offense to cover if its defense keeps Wyoming from creating explosive plays. The Cowboys could control the game through field position and their rushing attack, but the hook above seven makes Northern Illinois the preferred side.
CFB Best Bet: Northern Illinois +7.5
UNLV vs. Air Force Best Bet
This matchup has experienced a notable change in favorite. Air Force opened as a slight underdog but has moved to approximately -1.5. The total has increased from 46.5 to 48.5, suggesting a somewhat more productive offensive game than initially expected.
Best Bet: Air Force -1.5
Air Force has home field and has attracted enough support to become the favorite. The Falcons’ rushing approach can create problems for opponents that struggle with assignment discipline, and controlling possession should help limit UNLV’s opportunities. UNLV has enough offensive ability to win, but laying less than a field goal with Air Force is reasonable.
CFB Best Bet: Air Force -1.5
Washington State vs. Oregon State Best Bet
Oregon State has been one of the stronger teams in its conference, entering at 4-2 after winning four consecutive games. Washington State is 1-5 and faces uncertainty at quarterback. The Beavers opened around -13.5 and have climbed to -18, while the total has increased from 48.5 to 52.5.
Best Bet: Oregon State -18
Oregon State has been considerably more dependable offensively, and Washington State’s quarterback situation creates a difficult matchup for the visitors. The Beavers have enough scoring ability to build a substantial lead, particularly if Washington State struggles to sustain drives. The spread has moved sharply, so there’s risk in laying the inflated number, but Oregon State has the stronger combination of form and offensive production.
CFB Best Bet: Oregon State -18
Nevada vs. North Dakota State Best Bet
North Dakota State enters at 5-1 and is favored by approximately 14.5 points against Nevada. The spread has remained relatively stable, while the total has dropped from 45.5 to 42.5. Nevada has struggled offensively, and the Bison have demonstrated enough defensive consistency to make this a difficult road assignment.
Best Bet: North Dakota State -14.5
North Dakota State has the stronger overall profile and home-field advantage. Nevada needs to generate consistent offense to stay within two touchdowns, and that has been a problem during its opening games. The low total creates some risk when laying a large spread, but the Bison should have opportunities to control the game and build separation.
CFB Best Bet: North Dakota State -14.5
Elon vs. Stanford Best Bet
Stanford is favored by approximately 35.5 points after opening at -32.5. The total has increased from 53.5 to 56.5. Stanford has the obvious talent advantage against its FCS opponent, but the market is asking the Cardinal to win by more than five touchdowns.
Best Bet: Elon +35.5
Stanford should win, but laying 35.5 points with a team that hasn’t been consistently productive offensively is a difficult proposition. Elon doesn’t need to threaten an upset to cover, and a few sustained drives could make the spread difficult for Stanford to reach. The Cardinal could dominate early, but the size of the number makes Elon the preferred betting side.
CFB Best Bet: Elon +35.5
Fresno State vs. San Diego State Best Bet
Fresno State enters at 4-2 and is favored by approximately 7.5 points against a San Diego State team sitting at 2-4. The spread has moved slightly toward the Aztecs after opening around 8.5, while the total has climbed to 45.5. Fresno State has been more consistent offensively, but San Diego State has home field.
Best Bet: Fresno State -7.5
Fresno State has been the more dependable team and has demonstrated enough offensive balance to create separation. San Diego State’s home-field advantage is a concern, particularly if the Aztecs can slow the game down. Still, the Bulldogs have been better at protecting the football and finishing drives. I’ll lay the points with Fresno State, although a flat seven would be preferable.
CFB Best Bet: Fresno State -7.5
College Football Best Bet of the Day
Of the 23 selections, Indiana +3.5 against Ohio State earns our College Football Best Bet of the Day. The market has moved from Ohio State -2.5 to -3.5, crossing the important number of three. Indiana gets home field in a matchup that should be competitive, and the extra half-point above a field goal gives the Hoosiers a meaningful advantage against the spread.
Ohio State has enough defensive talent to control this game, and Indiana will need to avoid turnovers to stay competitive. But the Buckeyes are now laying more than a field goal on the road. That makes Indiana the more attractive betting side at the current number.
College Football Best Bet of the Day: Indiana +3.5
