Colorado State’s Offensive Issues

The Rams are heading to Wyoming after their loss last week against Hawaii with a final score of 31-19. This would be the fifth loss on the season for the Rams and their third at home. Colorado State will be looking to find their first road win of the season and aim to grab another much-needed conference victory.

Colorado State has a huge issue this season on offense as they rank 108th in points and total yards this season. The offensive line for the Rams has not looked great this season as they sit 119th in sacks. Without proper protection, it is no wonder the Rams rank 110th in passing yards this season. Sophomore Quarterback Jackson Brousseau has been leading this offense and is averaging only 148.2 yards per game and has a total of six passing touchdowns this season. The one upside to Brousseau’s season is that he has yet to throw an interception across his five games started.

On defense, we are not seeing too much of an improvement for the Rams as they sit 89th overall in points allowed and 108th in total yards allowed. Colorado State has been one of the more disciplined defenses in the country this season, ranking 33rd in both penalties and penalty yards. Wyoming Relying Too Much On Defense

The Cowboys are returning home after their loss on Saturday versus Air Force with a final score of 24-21. Wyoming has now lost three of their last four games. The Cowboys will be looking to a much-needed bounce-back win on Saturday against a conference opponent.

Wyoming has one of the better defenses in the country, ranking 55th in points allowed and 53rd in yards allowed. However, their defense is more suited to go against passing offenses rather than running ones. This is why they struggled so hard last week against Air Force, which has one of, if not the best, running offenses in the country. The Cowboys are 28th in passing yards allowed this season, with Wyoming allowing only 5.7 yards per reception (11th). A key feature of their defense has been Senior Defensive Lineman Ben Florentine who leads the team in sacks at five on the season. This pass-rushing defensive line has put a lot of pressure on teams but not enough to stop the run game.

The Cowboys have relied on their defense to grab wins as their offense has struggled most of the year thus far. Wyoming is 114th in scoring despite sitting 85th in yards and 70th in plays. Wyoming just seems to have issues finishing their drives, with the team sitting 69th in first downs. You would think they would be able to consistently generate points if they can drive into the opposing red zone, but this is not the case. Sophomore Quarterback Kaden Anderson is the driving force of this offense. Anderson has averaged 211.4 yards per game and has a total of nine touchdowns. A sour note, however, is that Anderson also has six interceptions on the season, which may be a large reason why drives cannot generate points, as they consistently provide turnovers for the other team every game.
