Colorado State Has Been Playing Wild Games
Colorado State finally ended its four-game losing streak against San Diego State, although it certainly wasn't comfortable. The Rams needed 56 points to win because the defense surrendered another 49. Their previous three opponents had scored 66, 56 and 59, which tells you plenty about where things have gone wrong. Colorado State lost those games to Texas State, Oregon State and UTSA. Scoring hasn't been the biggest problem. The Rams have produced at least 26 points in four straight games, but stopping opponents has been another story.
Hauss Hejny has thrown for 952 yards and 13 touchdowns, with only two interceptions on 104 attempts. He's also gained 213 rushing yards, although his questionable status is worth monitoring. Mel Brown has been excellent when given opportunities, rushing for 454 yards on just 52 carries. Durell Robinson has another 383 yards and eight touchdowns. RJ Vick leads the receivers with 367 yards. Defensively, Oumar Diomande has 67 tackles, while CJ Blocker has three interceptions.
Injuries: Hauss Hejny, G. Houser, T. Foster and RJ Vick are questionable.
Utah State Looking for More Offense
Seventeen points weren't enough for Utah State at Texas State last Saturday. The Aggies lost 20-17, a week after squeezing past Washington State by an almost identical 17-16 score. They've had trouble finding the end zone for much of October. Boise State beat them 37-18, while Utah shut them out 33-0 in September. Their 21-10 win over Troy was another game where the defense had to do most of the work. Utah State has managed just 73 points across its last five outings, and that's a concern against a Colorado State team that scored 56 last weekend.
Grady Brosterhous has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns would suggest he's comfortable with, recording six picks alongside seven scoring passes. He's completed 99 of 178 attempts for 1,120 yards and has been sacked 18 times. Javen Jacobs has given the Aggies some help on the ground, picking up 435 yards at 5.2 per carry. Eli Wood has been their best option through the air, with 37 catches, 479 yards and five touchdowns. Defensively, Brevin Hamblin has made 58 tackles, just two more than Asher Cunningham. The Aggies have 13 sacks as a team.
Injuries: McCae Hillstead, S. Vailahi, C. Remenowsky, K. Kaio, Anthony Garcia, R. Haynes and N. Washington are questionable. Nikko Boncore and J. Nelson are out.
Key To The Game
Utah State has a chance to improve its scoring numbers against a Colorado State defense that has conceded 272 points in five games. Brosterhous hasn't been particularly accurate, though, and the Aggies have thrown 10 interceptions as a team. Colorado State has nine defensive interceptions, which could become important if Utah State falls behind. The Rams have the stronger rushing attack, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. Hejny's availability matters, but Colorado State also has enough production from Brown and Robinson to challenge the Aggies.
Colorado State vs Utah State Game Pick
- Colorado State Rams +6.5
I'm surprised Utah State is giving away nearly a touchdown here. The Aggies have scored only 73 points across their last five games, and four of those contests ended with Utah State scoring 18 or fewer. Colorado State's defense is a major concern, but the Rams have been putting points on the board. Brown and Robinson offer two useful rushing options, while Hejny has been dangerous through the air when available. Utah State may find more room offensively than usual, but I prefer Colorado State with the points. The Rams could win outright.
Colorado State vs Utah State Over/Under Pick
- Over 63.5
Colorado State's recent games have featured some remarkable totals. Four of the Rams' last five contests produced at least 82 combined points, including Saturday's 56-49 win over San Diego State. Utah State hasn't been involved in anything similar, largely because its offense has struggled. Still, the Aggies won't often face a defense that has allowed at least 41 points in five consecutive games. Brosterhous and Jacobs should find opportunities against that unit. Colorado State can contribute plenty itself, especially on the ground. I'm backing the Rams' defensive problems to help push this game over 63.5.
