Delaware Faces Another Power Conference Opponent
Delaware couldn’t complete the upset at Wake Forest, but the Blue Hens were competitive for stretches of the 35-20 defeat. Delaware generated 318 total yards, including 233 through the air, and entered the fourth quarter trailing by only eight points before Wake Forest finally created separation.
Nick Minicucci completed 21 of 34 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Joey Castellanos provided 64 rushing yards on 12 attempts, while Sean Wilson led the receiving attack with 82 yards and a touchdown. Delaware demonstrated that it can create some opportunities through the passing game against an FBS defense.
The concern is whether the Blue Hens can consistently finish those opportunities against a much stronger Vanderbilt team. Delaware averaged only 3.4 yards per rushing attempt against Wake Forest and surrendered 211 yards on the ground. That becomes particularly concerning against a Vanderbilt offense capable of attacking defenses with a physical and mobile running game.
Vanderbilt Opens With a Convincing Victory
Vanderbilt began its season with a comfortable 42-14 victory over Georgia Southern. The Commodores produced 451 total yards, rushed for 252 and controlled the matchup after building a 28-7 halftime advantage.
Whit Muschamp completed 15 of 21 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Sedrick Alexander rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns, while Jamezell Lassiter led the receiving corps with 72 yards. Vanderbilt’s balance made the offense difficult to defend, with the Commodores averaging better than six yards per offensive play.
The Vanderbilt defense also delivered a strong opening performance, particularly after Georgia Southern’s early touchdown. The Commodores allowed only 14 points and forced the Eagles into difficult situations throughout the second half. Vanderbilt now remains home and takes a considerable drop in competition against a Delaware team playing its second consecutive game against a Power Four opponent.
Delaware vs Vanderbilt Picks and Prediction
Pick: Vanderbilt -27.5
Vanderbilt -27.5 is my preferred side. Delaware showed enough against Wake Forest to deserve some respect, but the Blue Hens allowed 211 rushing yards and now face a Vanderbilt offense that produced 252 on the ground in its opener. The Commodores have the balance to attack Delaware without relying heavily on one phase of the offense, and their defensive advantage should create additional possessions. Vanderbilt has a legitimate opportunity to build a four-touchdown margin before the fourth quarter. Take Vanderbilt -27.5.
Pick: Under 56.5
The Under 56.5 is my preferred total. Vanderbilt could do most of the scoring, but Delaware’s path to pushing this game Over requires considerably more offensive success than I’m willing to project against the Commodores. Vanderbilt also has little reason to maintain an aggressive passing attack if it builds a substantial second-half advantage. A score around 38-13 or 41-10 fits the matchup and remains below the current number. Take Under 56.5.
Final Picks: Vanderbilt -27.5 and Under 56.5
