The Blue Devils (4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS) were off last week after having a three-game losing streak snapped by No. 12 Georgia Tech, 27-18, as -3.5 favorites. The Tigers (3-4 SU, 2-5 ATS) are coming off a bye week following a 35-24 loss against SMU two weeks back. Duke in ACC hunt

At once a 1-2 SU team, conference play allowed the Blue Devils to rattle off three straight wins before Georgia Tech put a halt to things. They are 3-1 SU against ACC opponents, with three of their final five games on the road.

The emergence of quarterback Darian Mensah has sparked a Duke offense that has averaged 33.9 points, seventh in the ACC, and 463.3 total yards per game, the third-best mark in the conference. The sophomore QB leads the nation with 2,211 passing yards and is tied for the lead with 17 TDs. The 319 passing yards per game averaged by Duke is the best mark in the ACC. The team also averages 144.3 yards per game on the ground, led by Nate Sheppard, who has 497 yards and 4 TDs on 71 carries. Cooper Barkate is the team’s top receiver with 39 catches for 647 yards and 4 TDs.

Duke’s defense is giving up 25.7 points and 375.9 total yards per game. Against the pass, they rank 12th in the conference, allowing 245.9 yards, and versus the rush, 130 yards per game, 10th in the ACC. They are tied for fourth in the ACC with 8 interceptions and they’ve sacked the opposing QB 17 times. Vincent Anthony Jr. has been responsible for 6.5 of those sacks, tops in the ACC. Caleb Weaver leads the team with 50 tackles and has half a sack and an interception.

Team notes

  • Mensah was named one of the Top 10 finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
  • Todd Pelino is 26-26 on PATs and 9-14 on FGs with a long of 47 yards.
  • Sheppard averages 10.6 points per game, 12th in the ACC.
  • Duke averages 24.4 yards on kickoff returns, fourth in the conference.

Clemson continues to fall short

The Tigers were unable to capitalize on their two-game winning streak as they went without their starting QB and wound up losing to SMU to fall to 2-3 SU in conference play. Clemson will play three of their last five games at home, including a non-conference tilt versus FCS Furman.

The bye week was beneficial for the team after it missed the team’s last game due to a sprained ankle. Cade Klubnik is set to return under center this week. The senior has thrown for 1,530 yards this season with 11 TDs and 5 INTs. He’s helped the offense average 400.7 total yards and 284.3 passing yards per game. The Tigers rank 12th in the conference in scoring offense, averaging 26 points per game. Four receivers have over 20 catches on the year, with Bryant Wesco Jr. leading the pack with catches and 537 yards with 6 TDs. Adam Randall is pacing the rushing attack with 433 yards. The offensive line has yielded only 11 sacks on the year.

The Clemson defense ranks fourth in the ACC, allowing 20.9 points and they are sixth in giving up 337.6 yards per game. Against the rush, they are fifth best in the conference, allowing 109.7 yards and their passing game ranks eighth, giving up 227.9 yards per game. They have recorded 17 sacks and picked off 5 passes. Sammy Brown is the team tackles leader with 48, including 2 sacks. Will Heidt has a team-high 4 sacks as part of his 25 tackles.

Team notes

  • Klubnik (792 completions) is 25 completions shy of passing Charlie Whitehurst on the program’s all-time completions list.
  • Randall is one of five FBS players with at least 4 rushing TDs and 3 receiving TDs.
  • Anthony Williams is a TD reception shy of moving into 10th on the program’s all-time list.
  • Clemson has recorded a rushing touchdown in 91 of their last 103 games.

Duke vs. Clemson Picks

Spread Pick for Duke vs. Clemson

  • Duke +2.5 (4 units)

These two last met in 2023 when Duke won by 21 points at home as +12 underdogs. The Tigers being less than a three-point favorite at home against Duke tells you just where both of these teams are right now. Over the last five meetings, Clemson was at least a -10.5 favorite each time. The Tigers won 15 straight games at home against Duke, but they are desperate and playing as such. Klubnik has been far from the Heisman hopeful he was at the season’s start. That ankle should also still be a bit tender, regardless of the rest, and that’s going to be in the back of his already clouded head. Mensah has been as consistent as any QB has been, throwing for over 260 yards in all games. Last weekend, he threw for 373 yards against a Georgia Tech passing defense that ranks ahead of Clemson in the ACC. The Tigers are in real trouble here. Duke is 2-0 ATS in the last two meetings.

Take the Blue Devils.

Over/Under Pick for Duke vs. Clemson

  • Over 56 (5 units)

When these teams met two years ago, they combined for only 35 points to hit the under against a 55-point total. Clemson didn’t do much in that matchup, scoring just one touchdown. We should expect a lot more from them here, especially getting Klubnik back at QB. The Tigers averaged 34.4 points over their last three games. Duke’s offense is working like a well-oiled machine under the leadership of the nation’s top passing quarterback. The best thing about Mensah is that he seems to lack the ability to feel pressure. The Blue Devils scored 38 points or more in three of their last four games. Between the two teams, the over is 8-6 this season.

Take the over.
