Duke Leans on Its Running Game and Defense
Duke opened its season with a 17-3 victory over Tulane behind an outstanding rushing performance. The Blue Devils generated 250 rushing yards and finished with a 381-258 advantage in total offense.
Nate Sheppard was the difference-maker, carrying 35 times for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Walker Eget had a quieter afternoon, completing 13 of 26 passes for 131 yards without a touchdown or interception.
Defensively, Duke held Tulane to only 54 rushing yards and three points. The Blue Devils also controlled possession for more than 36 minutes. Replicating that formula would give Duke an excellent chance of staying inside the number at Illinois.
Illinois Offense Starts Fast
Illinois opened with a 42-23 victory over UAB, immediately showing that its offense can still produce despite offseason personnel changes. The Fighting Illini now remain home for a much more difficult nonconference matchup.
Katin Houser was extremely efficient in his Illinois debut, completing 13 of 17 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 29 yards and another score, accounting for four touchdowns overall.
Illinois also has the confidence of last year's 45-19 victory at Duke. The difference this time is that Duke enters after an excellent defensive opener and demonstrated a rushing attack capable of controlling the clock.
Duke vs Illinois Picks and Prediction
Pick: Duke +6.5
Illinois is the more likely outright winner at home, but Duke +6.5 is my preferred side. Sheppard's 227-yard performance gives Duke a way to shorten the game and keep Houser on the sideline, while the Blue Devils held Tulane to 54 rushing yards and three points. Illinois' offensive performance against UAB was impressive, but Duke represents a much stronger defensive test. With nearly a touchdown available, take Duke +6.5.
Pick: Under 53.5
The Under 53.5 is the stronger total play. Duke's opener produced only 20 combined points, and the Blue Devils controlled the game through their rushing attack and defense. Illinois scored 42 against UAB, but Duke should be capable of reducing the number of possessions and forcing longer drives. Something around 27-20 or 28-20 fits the matchup. Take Under 53.5.
Final Picks: Duke +6.5 and Under 53.5
