Minnesota could dominate virtually every meaningful statistical category and still have trouble covering this number. A 42-10 result would represent a 32-point blowout yet leave Eastern Illinois more than 11 points inside the spread. Even Minnesota's 42-20 victory in the previous meeting between these programs would have comfortably cashed the current underdog number. The biggest danger is Eastern Illinois repeatedly giving Minnesota short fields, but if the Panthers protect the football and manufacture even a couple of scoring drives, take Eastern Illinois +43.5.

Pick: Under 51.5

The Under 51.5 is the more attractive total because Minnesota may not need to play aggressively for four quarters. The Golden Gophers should be capable of controlling the matchup through their advantages in depth and physicality, but covering the total could require Minnesota to produce somewhere around 40-plus points unless Eastern Illinois contributes multiple scores. Once Minnesota establishes a comfortable advantage, shortening the game and getting additional players on the field becomes logical. Scores such as Minnesota 38-10, 41-7 or 35-10 all produce easy Golden Gophers victories while remaining below the current total.
