Eagles Playing with a Clipped Wing

The Eastern Michigan Eagles have gotten off to a rough start of the season as they are 2-5 (1-2 MAC) heading into this game and need to improve to get in the conference title picture during the remainder of the season. The Red Wolves’ offense has been struggling as they are averaging 23.7 points per game, ranking 97th in the nation. In their win over Northern Illinois last week, Dontae McMillan rushed for 104 yards, but it was the defense that held the Huskies to just 94 passing yards that stepped up.

Quarterback Noah Kim has been doing well this season as he has completed 142-of-227 (62.6%) of his passes for 1,483 yards with eight passing touchdowns to four interceptions, while also adding 50 rushes for 115 yards (2.3 yards per attempt) with four rushing touchdowns. McMillan has been a force in the running game as he has posted 105 carries for 637 yards (6.1 yards per carry) with two rushing touchdowns while being able to catch 18 passes for 191 (10.6 yards per reception) and two receiving touchdowns.

The defense for Eastern Michigan has been unable to keep points off the board as they are 122nd in college football as they are giving up 32.0 points per game. They also allow 453 yards per game (129th) and 246.6 rushing yards per game (135th). The Eagles have been applying pressure on this side of the field, but could do a bit better as they have five sacks, 17 pass deflections, three interceptions, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

RedHawks Looking to Stay undefeated in the MAC

The Miami RedHawks have been playing well as the season continues to roll on. They won on the road against the Akron Zips 20-7 last time out and have now wo three straight games. They are 100th in FBS with 23.0 points per game scored. Quarterback Dequan Finn has been holding his own so far as he has completed 58-of-104 (55.8%) of his passes for 838 yards with four passing touchdowns and five interceptions as well as 61 carries for 274 yards (4.5 yards per attempt) with one rushing touchdown.Β  He's managed the game better as of late, after starting with four picks in the first three games against tougher defenses in Wisconsin, Rutgers and UNLV. Wide receiver Kam Perry has been a force in the passing game as he has 17 catches for 505 yards (29.7 yards per reception) with three receiving touchdowns.

The defense for the RedHawks has been playing at a great level as they are giving up 20.7 points per game, which is 44th in college football as well. They allow just 321.3 yards per game overall (37th) and 4.7 yards per play (27th). Eastern Michigan Eagles vs. Miami (OH) RedHawks Pick

Spread Pick for Eastern Michigan vs. Miami (OH)

  • Miami RedHawks -13.5 (5 units)

Admittedly, this is a few more points than I would want to lay, but it isn’t crossing many big numbers to the point that I am okay with the major spread. We have the hook for two touchdowns and that is important. These defenses as of late have shown a major difference as Eastern Michigan is giving up 28.8 points in their previous five games, while Miami is allowing 7.0 points in their last three games. They are strong against the run and the pass, while EMU has allowed 482 yards per game and 266.2 rushing yards per contest on the road. The injuries for the Eagles are piling up to the point it is difficult to see their offense being able to play as effectively as they would hope. Miami is 3-2 ATS in their last five games against Eastern Michigan as well so go with the RedHawks to cover this number.

Over/Under Pick for Eastern Michigan vs. Miami (OH)

  • Over 46.5 (4 units)

These teams have been able to score the football effectively enough that 46.5 total points is not too much of a concern. Eastern Michigan slowed down Northern Illinois last week, but they are possess one of the worst offenses in the nation. They'll be back to the team that has allowed 21 or more points in four games this season. Both teams have been able to depend on the running game to open the playbook up as Eastern Michigan is averaging 4.4 yards per rushing attempt with 10 rushing touchdowns, while Miami gets 4.3 yards per pop with six rushing touchdowns as a team.Β  Both offensive lines have been able to play well throughout the season as the Eagles have allowed seven sacks while the RedHawks have allowed eight. With these offenses not really having many negative plays throughout the season, take over 46.5 total points as the play for this game.
