Eastern Washington Has Already Faced Strong FCS Competition
Eastern Washington's 1-2 record comes with some important context. The Eagles opened with a 34-24 victory over Northern Iowa before running into two difficult opponents. Their latest assignment was a trip to nationally ranked South Dakota, where Eastern Washington fell 41-23 despite continuing to compete after falling behind.
The biggest concern from Saturday was the defense. South Dakota generated enough offense to repeatedly create scoring opportunities and eventually reached 41 points. That becomes particularly concerning against Washington because the Eagles are now stepping from high-level FCS competition into a Big Ten environment with a significant disadvantage in overall depth.
Eastern Washington does have enough offensive ability to make Washington work. The Eagles scored 23 at South Dakota and 34 in their opener, so this isn't necessarily an FCS opponent that will simply disappear offensively. Their best chance of covering a large spread is producing enough sustained drives to prevent Washington from dominating possession while taking advantage of a Huskies offense that struggled badly to create separation against Utah State.
Washington Is Unbeaten but Has Plenty to Clean Up
Washington is 2-0, and the Huskies opened the season with an encouraging 24-10 victory over Washington State in the Apple Cup. Week 2 was much less convincing. Washington needed a fourth-quarter touchdown to escape Utah State 16-14 at Husky Stadium, surviving a game in which it entered as the clear favorite.
The positive takeaway is that Washington's defense continues to perform. The Huskies have allowed only 24 points through two games and haven't surrendered more than 14 in either contest. That defensive floor makes Washington difficult to upset, particularly at Husky Stadium, even when the offense isn't operating efficiently.
The question for bettors is whether Washington can create enough offensive separation to cover a massive FCS spread. Eastern Washington just allowed 41 points to South Dakota, so the opportunity is certainly there. However, Washington scoring only 16 against an 0-2 Utah State team makes it difficult to blindly lay five or six touchdowns. The Huskies should win comfortably, but the eventual number will matter considerably.
Eastern Washington vs Washington Picks and Prediction
Pick: Eastern Washington +35.5 or Better
Take Eastern Washington if the Eagles are getting +35.5 or better. Washington is clearly the superior team, but the Huskies have scored only 40 combined points through their first two games. Asking them to cover more than five touchdowns requires an offensive explosion they haven't yet demonstrated. Eastern Washington has enough offensive capability to contribute points, making the Eagles attractive if the market gives us five touchdowns or more.
Pick: Under 56.5
Take the Under if the total is set at 56.5 or higher. Washington has allowed only 10 and 14 points, and the Huskies should be capable of controlling Eastern Washington without turning this into a shootout. The bigger question is how many points Washington itself produces after scoring only 16 against Utah State. A projected Washington 38, Eastern Washington 14 gives the Huskies a comfortable victory while cashing both the underdog and Under at our target numbers.
Final Picks: Eastern Washington +35.5 or Better and Under 56.5
