Florida Atlantic Looking for Hope
Florida Atlantic fell flat against Memphis in their most recent contest, losing by a score of 55-26. Caden Veltkamp threw for 318 yards and completed 31/50 passes, but didn't record a touchdown or an interception. Veltkamp led the ground game with 28 yards on only eight carries with a touchdown while two other rushers had a TD on the day. Easton Messer and Jayshon Platt each caught nine passes and had over 100 yards on the day, but Messer had the most yards with 131. Florida Atlantic will have 37 new players arriving through the transfer portal while 33 players will be departing the program. Among the incoming transfers, Dillion Williams and Quincy Brown are the most highly rated. Phillip Dunman and Jordan Church are going to be the biggest losses for the Owls this season. It may take some time for this team to gel, but they need to put some wins together to establish relevance. Six players are listed on Florida Atlantic's injury report, and all are questionable for this upcoming contest.
Veltkamp is the primary QB for the Owls with a 64% completion percentage for 1,198 yards, eight touchdowns, a team-high two rushing touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Germari Sands has the most yards rushing with 245 while obtaining only 38 carries. Messer has the most receiving yards and receptions with 363 and 37, respectively. However, Asaad Waseem has caught the most TD passes with three. Hart Jr. has the most total tackles on the team with 23 while Williams has the most solo tackles with 16. Deshaun Batiste is the only one with more than one sack on the season while Terez Reid and Wendol Philord each have a team-high three passes defended. Interestingly, nobody has caught an interception thus far for the Owls.
Rice Ready to Cook
Rice lost their first conference matchup to the Navy Midshipmen last week by a score of 21-13. Chase Jenkins completed 12/21 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown while Quinton Jackson had a team-high 60 rushing yards on 15 carries. Drayden Dickman had the most receiving yards on the day with 45 and the only TD reception. However, Braylen Walker and Aaron Turner each caught a team-high four passes. Marcus Williams had six tackles and six tackle assists on defense while Plae Wyatt had the lone interception for the Owls.
The Owls are bringing in 12 new faces to their program, while 19 players have decided to leave the university. Among the top players going out, Ethan Onianwa, Tyson Flowers, Boden Green, and E.J. Warner are ranked as the top players. However, Rice brought in players such as Matthew Aribisala, Sean Sullivan, and Max Lofy to help mitigate the losses. So far, Rice has been doing a little above average, but they need to take advantage of the "weaker" opponents if they want to elevate themselves.
Jenkins is leading the offense with a 68.1% completion percentage for 383 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Jackson is the primary rusher with 353 yards on 73 carries while Jenkins is close behind with 69 carries, 248 yards, and a team-high three rushing touchdowns. Dickmann has caught the most passes on the team with 18 and has two of the four receiving touchdowns on the year. He is also leading in receiving yards with 168. Among the defensive players, Andrew Awe has a team-high 37 total tackles and Michael Daley has the most sacks with four. Khary Crump has the most passes defended with six while Jack Kane and Plae Wyatt each have an interception on the season. Eleven players are on the injured list for Syracuse, including Kane. All are questionable for this upcoming matchup.
Florida Atlantic vs Rice Pick
Spread Pick for FAU vs Rice
- Rice -5 (4 units)
Considering Rice was able to keep things relatively competitive against Navy, I feel comfortable taking them on a small spread at home here. Florida Atlantic has won only two of their last ten overall, and they are 2-8 ATS as well. Rice has covered the spread in four of their last six games and Florida Atlantic will still be trying to recover after getting slaughtered by Memphis. I don't trust Florida Atlantic's defense at all, and FAU has only covered once in their last four meetings against Rice.
Over/Under pick for FAU vs Rice
- Over 54 (4 units)
Until FAU has a decent game on defense, I will be taking the over every time. Rice has scored 28+ points in their last two games before faltering against arguably the top team in the conference. I trust they can score 35+ against a weak defense in FAU. Florida Atlantic to their credit, has scored 26+ points on offense the past three weeks in a row. I expect them to continue this trend and hit the over. Despite being 2-8 ATS, FAU is 8-2 on the over in their last 10 and Rice is 3-1 on the over this season.
