How will Florida respond after ugly LSU loss?
That the Florida Gators lost to the LSU Tigers last weekend, on the road, is a forgivable misstep in the college football playoff picture – LSU is ranked third in the AP Top 25, the highest of 11 SEC teams to appear in the poll and 13 to receive votes. That the Gators' sophomore quarterback D.J. Lagway threw five interceptions in the game, including a pick-six in the third quarter to put the Tigers up 20-10 and two more picks to end the Gators' last two drives, paints a bleaker picture of the team's long-term fortunes. Speculation abounds that Lagway is playing through an injury, but the fact remains that Florida lost a game in which they outgained LSU by 50 yards, gained 23 first downs while only allowing their opponent to gain 10, and held their opponent to four conversions on 14 third downs. The loss was a huge opportunity blown for the Gators, and a tough pill to swallow for their fans.
Looking ahead, optimism that Florida will do well on the road against Miami – a team that slots in at No. 4 after their 49-12 trouncing of a USF team that beat Florida in Week 2 – is in short supply. Head coach Billy Napier is in his fourth season at the helm of the Gators and has a 20-21 overall record since taking the job. His job security may be contingent on the Gators' righting their ship down the stretch, but the schedule hardly gets any easier after Miami – all but one of the Gators' remaining opponents are either 3-0 entering Week 4 or in the AP Top 25.

Will Miami keep rising through early season?
The Miami Hurricanes have surged through the opening weeks of the 2025 college football season, opening the year with a 27-24 win over No. 6 Notre Dame in the renewal of a historic rivalry. Two weeks and a 45-3 win over FCS Bethune-Cookman later, the Hurricanes flattened No. 18 South Florida 49-12 – more than covering the 17.5-point spread against a Bulls team that'd opened the season with consecutive wins over ranked teams, including the Gators team that Miami is hosting this week.
Carson Beck, the team's senior quarterback who spent the first four years of his college career at Georgia, has performed exceptionally in his first few games for Miami. He's completed 79.3 percent of his passes for an average of 9.9 yards per attempt, has thrown seven touchdowns against only two interceptions, and has only lost 11 yards on two sacks. The Hurricanes' offense ranks 21st among FBS teams with 306.7 passing yards per game and ties for 32nd with 40.3 points per game – phenomenal numbers for a team that's played two ranked opponents.
If Miami takes care of business against Florida this week, they'll play a Florida State team next week that currently sits at No. 7 in the Top 25. Florida hasn't fallen nearly far enough for this to be framed as a trap game, but the other constituent parts are there. We'll see if the Hurricanes can keep rising ahead of the beginning of their conference schedule.
Florida vs Miami Pick
Spread Pick for Florida vs Miami
- Miami -8.5 (-110) (5 Units)
Three games into the season, Miami has covered both of their games against FBS opponents—both of which were ranked. Florida is trending sharply in the wrong direction heading into this game, and the Hurricanes only need to win by nine points, at home, to cover. Lagway could bounce back and still play a poor game. The Miami offensive line has been dominant thus far and will allow Beck to have the time to make enough plays against a pretty good Gators' defense. Lagway and the Gators are just too error-prone to go with. I wouldn't overthink taking the Hurricanes here.
Over/Under Pick for Florida vs Miami
- Under 50.5 (-105) (5 Units)
Florida has scored 16 points in two games against FBS competition this season, and Miami doesn't figure to give them a vastly easier time than South Florida or LSU. Miami's offense should carry the day, but they're playing a Florida team that—despite everything—only gave up 38 points to the Bulls and Tigers. The total line of 50.5 is a bit ambitious for my taste; I'd definitely lean under.
