FSU busts out of slump

The Seminoles met their 3-0 SU start with a four-game losing streak, which they were only able to snap last weekend against Wake Forest. They are 1-4 SU in ACC play and three of their final four games are on the road.

The 42 points scored by the team in last weekend’s win over Wake was their best offensive performance since they scored 66 against Kent State back on September 20. They do have the top-scoring offense in the ACC, averaging 40 points per game, aided by a pair of big performances early. They are picking up 510.5 total yards and 269.3 passing yards per game. Tommy Castellanos had a passing and rushing TD against Wake, the second time this season he’s done that. The FSU QB has thrown for 1,818 yards with 10 TDs and 5 INTs, and he’s rushed for 328 yards with 6 TDs. The team as a whole is averaging an ACC-best 241.3 yards per game on the ground. Gavin Sawchuk leads the charge with 432 yards and 8 TDs on 93 carries.

Florida State’s scoring defense is second in the ACC, allowing 20.6 points per game, and they are third in total defense, giving up just 317.3 yards per game. Their passing defense is allowing 202.9 yards, and the rushing defense, 114.4 yards per game. They are tied for third in the ACC with 10 interceptions, and they’ve recorded 22 sacks, fourth most in the conference. Earl Little Jr. leads the team with 52 tackles, and his 4 interceptions are tied for second most in the ACC. Mandrell Desir leads the team with 3 sacks as part of his 13 tackles.

Team notes

  • Robinson was added to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List, honoring the best receiver in FBS.
  • Castellanos is first in the country, averaging 16.77 yards per completion.
  • Little is one of only five players with at least 50 tackles and 4 interceptions.
  • The ā€˜Noles conversion efficiency rate of 64.2% is best in the ACC and third-best in the country.
  • The defense has held four opponents under 300 yards this season.

Nothing doing for Clemson

The Tigers almost had people thinking they had turned things around with their two-game winning streak against ACC cupcakes, UNC and BC. They sank right back down with back-to-back losses and are now 2-4 SU in the ACC with four games remaining.

Through eight games, the Clemson scoring offense is averaging 28.4 points per game, 10th in the ACC. Their 420.6 total yards per game places them seventh in the conference, and their 296.9 passing yards are third best. After missing the SMU game, Cade Klubnik returned under center and threw for a season-high 385 yards with 2 TDs in the Duke loss. The senior QB has 1,915 passing yards with 13 TDs, 5 INTs, and 8 interceptions. He’s found Bryant Wesco Jr. 31 times for 537 yards and 6 TDs. Clemson’s ground game ranks 11th in the ACC, gaining 123.8 yards per game. Adam Randall is 10th in the conference with 522 yards, finding the end zone six times on his 101 carries.

On defense, the Tigers are giving up 24 points per game, 10th among ACC sides. They are eighth in total defense, allowing 350.3 yards per game. Against the pass, they are giving up 244.5 yards and versus the run, 105.8 yards per game, fourth best in the ACC. The team has recorded 19 sacks and has 5 interceptions. Sammy Brown leads the team with 58 tackles, 12th in the ACC, with 2 sacks and 2 passes deflections. Will Heidt leads the team and is tied for 10th in the conference with 4 sacks.

Team notes

  • With one more win, Klubnik will have sole possession of seventh place on the program’s all-time wins list.
  • Offensive lineman Blake Miller will start his 50th consecutive game, setting a school record for non-specialists.
  • Adam Randall is one of four FBS players with at least 6 rushing TDs and at least 3 receiving TDs.
  • The Tigers have had four straight games with a 100-plus-yard receiver.
  • The team has scored points in 302 straight games, tied for the 12th-longest streak all-time.

Florida State vs. Clemson Picks

Spread Pick for FSU vs. Clemson

  • Florida State +2.5 (5 units)

When these two met last season, Clemson walked away with a 16-point victory as -16.5 favorites at home. Florida State owns a 21-16 SU advantage in the head-to-head series. While both teams have played well below their expectations, it seems that Florida State has had more bad luck, whereas Clemson is just bad. The ā€˜Noles have the seventh-best scoring offense in the country, and while their average was beefed up by a pair of early-season explosions, they still managed to score at least 31 points in three of their five conference tilts. They also have the second-best scoring defense in the conference and are coming off of a solid performance where they allowed just one touchdown. Clemson couldn’t get past Duke last week and allowed them to score 46 points, so the defense is down at this stage of the season. They don’t put a ton of pressure on the backfield, so Castellanos will have time to figure things out. Florida State is 2-0 ATS in the last two meetings.

Take the Seminoles getting the points.

Over/Under Pick for Florida State vs. Clemson

  • Over 56 (5 units)

These two scored a combined 42 points when they met last season, hitting the under against a 47.5-point total. The total goes up in this meeting with one of the nation’s top scoring teams in the mix. The Seminoles struggled to score 18 points in a game against Stanford, the last of their four-game losing streak. They used the bye week to regroup and came out swinging with 42 points last weekend. The team scored 31 points in six games so far this season. Clemson has actually picked up their scoring in conference play, averaging 31.6 points per game, compared to 12.3 in non-conference tilts. The Tigers scored over 40 points in two of their last three games. The over is 4-3-1 in the last eight games between the teams.

Take the over.
