Fresno State couldn't have looked much worse offensively in its season-opening loss at USC, but the Bulldogs completely reversed that narrative Saturday. Fresno State defeated Sacramento State 49-3 and scored 32 points during a remarkable second quarter.

The Bulldogs didn't simply benefit from one or two short fields. Fresno State consistently generated offensive production and established such a large advantage before halftime that the second half became little more than game management. Just as importantly, the defense held Sacramento State to three points.

The level of competition now rises substantially. San Jose State has already demonstrated that it can compete against FBS opponents and gets this rivalry matchup at home. Fresno State therefore cannot assume Saturday's offensive explosion automatically carries over, but the Bulldogs at least enter with confidence rather than questions about whether they can score.

San Jose State Has Already Shown It Can Bounce Back

San Jose State opened the season with a 42-26 loss at USC but showed plenty of fight despite entering as an enormous underdog. The Spartans then traveled across the country to Eastern Michigan and earned a 27-21 victory, demonstrating an ability to immediately respond to adversity.

That road victory was particularly valuable because San Jose State didn't need the comfort of CEFCU Stadium to get into the win column. The Spartans now return home for an important matchup against a familiar California opponent, and the rivalry element should eliminate any concern about motivation.

San Jose State's challenge is slowing a Fresno State offense that just rediscovered its confidence. The Spartans have already surrendered 42 to USC, although that came against a much stronger opponent. This matchup should fall somewhere between the USC and Eastern Michigan games and has the potential to remain tight deep into the fourth quarter.

Take San Jose State if the Spartans are getting +3.5 or better. Fresno State's 49-3 victory was impressive, but it came against Sacramento State after the Bulldogs were shut out 39-0 by USC. San Jose State has already won an FBS road game and now gets this matchup at home. If the market gives us more than a field goal, I'll take the Spartans in what I expect to be a one-possession rivalry game.

Take the Under if the total is set at 54.5 or higher. Fresno State's defense just held Sacramento State to three points, while San Jose State has shown enough defensive competence to prevent this from becoming another Bulldogs blowout. Rivalry games can also become more physical and conservative than raw offensive numbers suggest. A projected Fresno State 27, San Jose State 24 gives the Spartans the cover while keeping the game below the target.
