Fresno State doesn't necessarily need to match USC offensively for four quarters. There is also experience along the offensive line and in the running game, which gives Fresno State a potential path toward shortening the matchup. Sustained rushing possessions would keep USC's offense on the sideline and reduce the total number of opportunities the Trojans have to create separation.

Quarterback play is the larger question. Fresno State entered the offseason without a completely settled situation at the position, and facing USC at the Coliseum is a difficult environment for an offense establishing a new identity.

USC enters 2026 with much higher expectations after building an offense that should again rank among the country's most productive units. The Trojans return substantial experience along the offensive line and have enough offensive talent to create major matchup problems for Fresno State.

The biggest advantage could come at the line of scrimmage. USC returns all five starters along its offensive line, giving the Trojans an established group against a Fresno State defense that hasn't regularly faced this level of size and depth.

USC also has the unusual advantage of already having played a game. The Trojans opened their season against San Jose State on August 29, while Fresno State will be playing its first competitive game of the year. USC therefore gets an opportunity to address Week 0 mistakes while Fresno State goes through the normal adjustments associated with a season opener.

The Trojans have historically controlled this matchup as well. USC won the most recent meeting 45-17 in 2022 and has won four of the five officially recognized meetings between the programs.

USC's advantage in the trenches is concerning, but the market already accounts for much of that difference. One current model makes USC a 23.8-point favorite, while another simulation projects a 37-15 USC victory, which would produce exactly a 22-point margin and cash Fresno State +22.5 by half a point. That projected margin is close enough to make laying the favorite uncomfortable. Take Fresno State +22.5, with +23 or better obviously offering additional value.

Pick: Over 51.5

The Over 51.5 gets the slight edge on the total. USC should be capable of reaching the mid-to-upper 30s, particularly with its offensive-line advantage and the benefit of already having played once.
