The betting question is whether Tennessee can create enough separation to cover almost seven touchdowns while also determining whether the Volunteers can produce enough offense to push a massive 66.5-point total Over.

Furman Already Has a Game Under Its Belt

Furman at least enters Knoxville having played meaningful football. The Paladins opened their season with a 20-3 victory over Anderson and produced an encouraging defensive performance. Furman held Anderson to only 160 total yards and just six rushing yards while recording seven tackles for loss. Obviously, facing Tennessee represents an astronomical increase in competition, but the Paladins have already worked through the normal opening-game adjustments.

The offense was less convincing. Furman generated enough production to win comfortably but did not exactly explode against Division II competition. The Paladins were scoreless after the first quarter and ultimately finished with 20 points. That becomes important when handicapping both the spread and total because Furman probably needs to contribute something offensively to cash the Over.

For the spread, however, Furman does not need to accomplish much. At +48.5, the Paladins can be completely outclassed and still cover. A 49-7 Tennessee victory leaves Furman comfortably inside the number. Even 52-7 gets the job done. The enormous cushion completely changes the betting equation.

Furman's Defense Faces an Enormous Step Up

Holding Anderson to three points and 160 yards is encouraging, but nobody should confuse Anderson's offense with what Furman will see Saturday afternoon. Tennessee possesses overwhelming advantages in size, speed and depth, particularly along the line of scrimmage.

The most encouraging part of Furman's opener was the run defense. Allowing only six net rushing yards shows that the Paladins were disciplined at the point of attack and consistently created penetration. Tennessee will obviously provide a much different challenge, but forcing the Volunteers to execute rather than simply handing them short fields is Furman's best route to staying inside the number.

Furman cannot afford turnovers or special-teams mistakes that create easy Tennessee touchdowns. When you're receiving nearly seven touchdowns, shortening the field for the favorite is the quickest way to make those points disappear. The Paladins need to make Tennessee consistently drive the length of the field.

Tennessee Should Control the Line of Scrimmage

Tennessee enters its sixth season under its current coaching staff after finishing 8-5 last year. The Volunteers have won six consecutive season openers and are 2-0 historically against Furman. Tennessee won those previous meetings 32-6 in 1941 and 52-7 in 1942.

The Volunteers should establish control along the offensive line. Tennessee returns significant starting experience up front, and this provides an ideal opportunity to establish the running game while developing depth before the schedule becomes substantially more difficult. Tennessee travels to Georgia Tech next week before eventually beginning SEC competition.

The physical advantage should become increasingly obvious as the afternoon progresses. Furman may compete effectively for a quarter, but maintaining that resistance against Tennessee's depth for four quarters is another matter. The Volunteers should eventually generate enough explosive plays and short scoring opportunities to pull away comfortably.

Tennessee Opens a New Era on Offense

One of the more interesting aspects of this matchup is Tennessee beginning the season with a new starting quarterback. The Volunteers are turning the offense over to highly regarded freshman Faizon Brandon, making Saturday his first college start.

That adds uncertainty when we're discussing a 48.5-point spread. Tennessee does not need perfect offensive execution to win comfortably, but covering almost seven touchdowns requires considerable scoring. A couple of early three-and-outs, turnovers or red-zone field goals instead of touchdowns could become extremely important against this enormous number.

At the same time, Tennessee's offensive system has historically produced massive scores against overmatched FCS opposition. The Volunteers beat East Tennessee State 72-17 last season and defeated Chattanooga 69-3 in 2024. Tennessee is capable of reaching the 50s or 60s here, which is exactly why sportsbooks are willing to post such an enormous spread.

Almost Seven Touchdowns Changes the Handicap

This is where separating the likely game result from the betting result becomes important. Tennessee could absolutely destroy Furman without covering -48.5.

Consider a hypothetical 52-10 Tennessee victory. The Volunteers would win by six touchdowns, dominate the game and probably accomplish everything they wanted from their opener. Furman bettors would still cash by 6.5 points.

I'm taking Furman +48.5, but shopping for the best number is important because some sportsbooks are currently offering only +46.5. Tennessee should dominate this game and could easily win by 40-plus points. That doesn't mean the Volunteers cover almost seven touchdowns. Furman already has a game under its belt, while Tennessee will be breaking in a new starting quarterback and eventually should have every reason to rotate heavily once the outcome is secure. A current independent projection has Tennessee winning 58-7, which produces a 51-point margin and would lose at +48.5, showing how thin the margin can become even in a massive blowout. I would much rather take nearly seven touchdowns and force Tennessee to keep scoring. Furman +48.5 is the side pick.

Pick: Under 66.5

Under 66.5 is my stronger selection. The number requires an enormous amount of production, and Furman's ability to contribute is the biggest question. Tennessee can score 49 and still need Furman to reach 18 points. Even a 56-7 destruction remains Under. Furman's opener produced only 23 combined points, while Tennessee may become increasingly conservative once it establishes a massive advantage.
