The Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs travel to Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia, to face the Liberty Flames on Saturday, September 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM ET on ESPN+. Gardner-Webb enters at 0-2 after losses to Georgia Southern and Western Carolina, while Liberty is 0-1 following a 20-13 road loss to James Madison. Gardner-Webb Searches for Its First Win

Gardner-Webb has endured a difficult beginning to the season, opening with a 35-14 loss at Georgia Southern before falling 38-20 to Western Carolina. The Runnin’ Bulldogs have surrendered 73 points through two games while struggling to generate enough consistent offense to keep pace.

Nate Hampton has handled the majority of the quarterback work for Gardner-Webb, and the Runnin’ Bulldogs have attempted to establish a balanced attack rather than becoming completely dependent on the passing game. The offense showed improvement against Western Carolina after scoring only 14 points in the opener, but sustaining drives remains an issue entering another road assignment.

The defensive matchup is the larger concern. Gardner-Webb has allowed at least 35 points in each of its first two games, and now the Runnin’ Bulldogs face an FBS opponent desperate to respond after losing its opener. Gardner-Webb needs to avoid falling behind early because Liberty’s rushing attack is capable of controlling the game once the Flames establish a lead.

Liberty Looks to Rebound at Home

Liberty’s season began with a disappointing 20-13 loss at James Madison, but the Flames remained within one possession throughout the second half. Liberty generated 275 total yards, including 184 through the air, but struggled badly on the ground against a physical James Madison defense.

Ethan Vasko completed 17 of 28 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown. Liberty managed only 91 rushing yards on 38 attempts, an average of 2.4 yards per carry, and that inability to consistently win on early downs prevented the Flames from establishing the offensive rhythm they wanted.

This matchup offers Liberty a much better opportunity to get its ground game moving. Gardner-Webb has surrendered 73 points through two games and doesn’t possess the defensive front James Madison brought to the opener. Liberty also returns to Williams Stadium for its home opener, giving the Flames an excellent opportunity to control this matchup from the opening quarter.

Gardner-Webb vs Liberty Picks and Prediction

Pick: Liberty -24.5 or Better

With conventional sportsbook odds not consistently posted, Liberty -24.5 or better is my target. Gardner-Webb has already allowed 35 and 38 points, while Liberty is taking a major drop in defensive competition after facing James Madison. The Flames should have considerably more success establishing the run, and that should open up easier opportunities for Vasko through the air. Gardner-Webb has also played two games already while Liberty comes in with extra preparation following its opener. If the number stays below 25 points, take Liberty -24.5 or better.

Pick: Under 52.5

The Under 52.5 is my preferred total target. Liberty’s opener produced only 33 combined points, and the Flames have shown they can play a slower, defense-oriented game when necessary. Gardner-Webb has reached only 34 combined points through two contests and now faces another FBS defense on the road. Liberty should control this game, but the Flames don’t need a shootout to cover our target spread. A result around 38-10 or 41-7 fits the matchup. Take the Under if the total is set at 52.5 or higher.

Final Picks: Liberty -24.5 or better and Under 52.5 or higher
