The Eagles lost 22-7, but holding Clemson to 22 points at Memorial Stadium is hardly a disastrous defensive performance. Georgia Southern enters Week 3 having surrendered only 22 points through its first two games.

The Clemson game also showed where the concerns remain. Georgia Southern managed only seven points and couldn't consistently finish drives against a Power Four defense. Jacksonville State represents a much more manageable opponent, but the Eagles still need greater offensive production if they expect to win away from home.

The encouraging part is that Georgia Southern shouldn't need a huge scoring output to remain competitive. Jacksonville State has already played three games and has experienced two losses, including Saturday's exhausting four-overtime defeat. If Georgia Southern's defense continues performing at its current level, getting more than a field goal becomes attractive.

Jacksonville State Returns Home After a Brutal Overtime Loss

Jacksonville State's 29-27 four-overtime loss at Ohio was about as difficult a defeat as a team can absorb. The Gamecocks had multiple opportunities to finish the game but eventually left Athens with their second loss of the season. They now have to recover physically and emotionally on a short one-week turnaround.

The result wasn't entirely negative. Jacksonville State demonstrated that it can remain competitive for four quarters on the road and took the game deep into overtime. The Gamecocks also return to AmFirst Stadium, where they should be much more comfortable after playing their previous game away from home.

The concern is laying more than a field goal against a Georgia Southern defense that has performed well through two weeks. Jacksonville State deserves a modest home-field advantage, but the underlying matchup looks close. When the spread moves toward 4.5, the Eagles become the more attractive side because this has all the characteristics of another one-possession game.
