Houston Comes Off an Encouraging Defeat
Houston opened its season with a 33-20 victory over Oregon State and followed that with a 77-6 destruction of Southern. The Cougars then received a significant increase in competition when they traveled to Texas Tech, and they nearly emerged with an upset before falling 28-26.
That performance may be more useful for evaluating Houston than the 77-point explosion against Southern. Going on the road against the nation’s No. 13 team and losing by only two suggests the Cougars can remain competitive when the opponent has comparable or superior personnel.
The danger is an emotional letdown. Houston went from playing a nationally ranked conference opponent to traveling to Statesboro for a nonconference game. The Cougars need to bring the same concentration because Georgia Southern’s home environment has historically been difficult for visiting teams.
Georgia Southern Gets the Ranked Opponent at Home
Georgia Southern gets exactly the kind of home opportunity that can energize a program. Houston arrives with a national ranking, but the Cougars are also coming off a draining two-point defeat and playing their second consecutive road game.
The Eagles’ best opportunity is to make this uncomfortable early. If Georgia Southern can establish offense and keep the crowd involved, Houston may have difficulty creating immediate separation. Allowing the Cougars to build a two-score advantage would dramatically change the matchup.
Defensively, Georgia Southern faces a Houston offense that has already scored 33 and 77 in victories. The Eagles cannot repeatedly give Houston short fields or explosive-play opportunities.

At a touchdown or less, Houston is the side.

Houston has scored 33, 77 and 26 through its first three games. The Cougars should generate points against Georgia Southern, but the home Eagles have enough situational advantages to contribute offensively. If the total remains in the mid-50s or below, a Houston victory somewhere around 34-24 gets the over home.
