Houston vs Texas Tech Picks and Prediction for Friday September 18 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 09/13/2026, 01:43 PM ET

The Houston Cougars travel to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, September 18, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET in one of the best games on Friday's college football schedule. Houston enters ranked No. 22 nationally after crushing Southern 77-6, while No. 13 Texas Tech improved its position with a 35-24 road victory over Oregon State. This is an early Big 12 matchup between two teams with legitimate conference championship aspirations. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Houston Gets Its First Major Test

Houston entered 2026 with legitimate expectations after producing a breakthrough 10-3 season a year ago. The Cougars returned considerable experience, giving them reason to believe last season's success was the beginning of something rather than an isolated run.

Houston's 77-6 destruction of Southern demonstrated the offensive ceiling of this team, although the competition changes dramatically Friday. Scoring freely against an FCS opponent is one thing; going into Lubbock and maintaining offensive efficiency against the defending Big 12 champion is another.

The Cougars don't necessarily need another offensive explosion to win this game. They need efficiency, ball security and the ability to stay within striking distance into the fourth quarter. If Houston can prevent Texas Tech from building an early two-score advantage, its experience should give the Cougars an opportunity to make this one extremely competitive.

Texas Tech Has the Home-Field Advantage

Texas Tech entered the season as one of the Big 12 favorites after winning the conference in 2025 and reaching the College Football Playoff. The Red Raiders also entered 2026 with one of the conference's deepest and most talented overall rosters.

Their 35-24 road victory at Oregon State was important because it required Texas Tech to win away from Lubbock against an FBS opponent rather than simply piling up numbers against an overmatched opening opponent. Now the Red Raiders return to Galaxy Stadium for a ranked conference matchup.

Home field matters considerably here. Texas Tech has assembled the kind of roster capable of winning another Big 12 championship, and forcing Houston to play from behind would allow the Red Raiders to dictate the game. The question is whether the market gives Houston enough points to account for the Cougars' own improvement and experience.

Houston vs Texas Tech Picks and Prediction

Pick: Houston +7.5 or Better

Take Houston if the Cougars are getting +7.5 or better. Texas Tech deserves to be favored at home and remains my pick to win the game outright, but Houston is too experienced and too dangerous to automatically lay more than a touchdown against. The Cougars won 10 games last season and entered 2026 with significant returning experience. Getting through the key number of seven makes Houston considerably more attractive. My projected score has Texas Tech winning, but not comfortably enough to justify laying more than a touchdown.

Pick: Under 58.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 58.5 or higher. Both teams demonstrated scoring ability last week, but this is a significant increase in defensive quality and game importance. Early Big 12 games between contenders can become more conservative once every possession carries conference-title implications. Houston's best path is controlling the game rather than engaging Texas Tech in a track meet. Something around Texas Tech 28, Houston 24 makes the underdog and Under an appealing combination.

Final Picks: Houston +7.5 or Better and Under 58.5
