Idaho State vs Utah State Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 5 2026
Idaho State makes the short trip to Logan to face Utah State at Maverik Stadium on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET with CBS Sports Network providing national television coverage. Idaho State enters at 1-0 after already getting its season underway, while Utah State will make its 2026 debut. The Aggies are favored by approximately 13.5 points, while the total is sitting around 61.5. Compared with many of the enormous FBS-versus-FCS spreads elsewhere on Saturday's schedule, the market is giving Idaho State considerably more respect. Utah State certainly deserves to be favored. The Aggies own the FBS roster and depth advantage, get the game at home and have dominated the historical series, going 19-2 against Idaho State with six consecutive victories. But Idaho State is coming off a 6-6 season that included a 5-3 Big Sky record and returns significant experience on both sides of the football. This isn't a typical FCS opponent being asked to simply survive an enormous mismatch.
Idaho State Brings Experience to Logan
Idaho State took a meaningful step forward last season, finishing 6-6 overall and 5-3 in Big Sky competition. The Bengals now enter the fourth season under their current coaching staff with considerably more continuity than many teams possess during opening week. Nine significant offensive contributors return from last season, while the defense brings back 14.
That offensive continuity is particularly important against Utah State. Idaho State returns quarterback Jordan Cooke after he threw for 3,052 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. The Bengals also return running back Dason Brooks, who rushed for 1,007 yards while averaging 6.4 yards per carry and scoring 10 touchdowns. Idaho State therefore doesn't have to enter Logan trying to establish an entirely new offensive identity.
The experience on defense may be even more important for the spread. Idaho State brings back multiple productive defenders from a unit that should understand the system considerably better entering 2026. The Bengals don't necessarily need to shut Utah State down. They need to create enough negative plays and stalled possessions to prevent the Aggies from consistently creating two or three scores of separation.
Idaho State Isn't Being Priced Like a Typical FCS Opponent
The +13.5 spread tells us plenty about how this matchup is being viewed. Compare this game with the 40-, 45- and 50-point spreads attached to several other FBS-versus-FCS games this weekend. Oddsmakers aren't treating Idaho State as a team with virtually no chance of competing.
That's reasonable given the Bengals' experience. They have already played once this season, meaning they have gone through live-game communication, substitutions, special teams and offensive execution while Utah State is still preparing for its first meaningful snap.
That doesn't eliminate the talent gap. Utah State should have advantages in overall size and depth, particularly as the game progresses. But Idaho State doesn't need to overcome those advantages for four quarters to cash +13.5.
The Bengals simply need to stay close enough that Utah State cannot comfortably pull away. A one-score game entering the fourth quarter would put Idaho State bettors in an excellent position.
The Bengals Have a Realistic Path to Scoring
The total of 61.5 suggests the market isn't expecting Idaho State to simply disappear offensively. That's another reason this matchup looks different from the typical FBS-FCS game.
Idaho State possesses enough returning production to put together sustained drives. Cooke gives the Bengals experience through the air, while Brooks provides a proven running option. That balance is important because Idaho State cannot afford to become one-dimensional against an FBS defense.
Reaching the 20s would dramatically strengthen the Bengals' chances of covering. If Idaho State scores 24, Utah State needs at least 38 to beat +13.5. If the Bengals reach 27, the Aggies need 41.
That's why I don't believe Idaho State needs an extraordinary defensive performance. The Bengals can give up points and still cover if their offense contributes enough to keep Utah State working.
Utah State Begins an Important 2026 Season
Utah State enters its second season under Bronco Mendenhall after finishing 6-7 in 2025. The Aggies are also entering a new era institutionally as they begin competition in the Pac-12 following 13 seasons in the Mountain West.
That creates considerable importance around the opener. Utah State wants to establish momentum before the level of competition increases, and an Idaho State team coming off a respectable Big Sky season provides a more legitimate opening test than the typical FCS opponent.
There is also reason for optimism despite some significant personnel turnover. Utah State's offensive line could emerge as a strength. Three of the Aggies' four returning offensive starters are up front, providing some continuity in the area that can be most important when trying to control an FCS opponent.
If Utah State establishes the line of scrimmage early, the Aggies should be able to dictate tempo and gradually wear down Idaho State. That's the most convincing argument for laying the points.
Utah State Has Offensive Questions to Answer
The concern is that Utah State isn't bringing back a fully established offense. Only four offensive starters return, and the Aggies will have a different starting quarterback after the position changed during the offseason.
McCae Hillstead won the starting job after returning to Utah State following two seasons at BYU. He previously appeared in eight games for the Aggies as a freshman in 2023, including four starts, so this isn't his first experience in Logan's offense or in an FBS environment.
Still, opening-game execution matters when we're being asked to lay almost two touchdowns. Utah State doesn't need to be perfect to beat Idaho State, but a couple of stalled drives or turnovers could make covering -13.5 considerably more difficult.
The offensive line gives the Aggies a foundation. If Utah State can consistently run the football, protect its quarterback and avoid obvious passing situations, the FBS depth advantage should become increasingly apparent during the second half.
Utah State Has Dominated the Series
History heavily favors the Aggies. Utah State is 19-2 all-time against Idaho State, including an imposing 16-1 record at home. The Aggies are also seeking their seventh consecutive victory in the series.
That history provides some justification for Utah State being favored, but it shouldn't be confused with evidence that the Aggies automatically cover 13.5. We're betting on the 2026 versions of these teams rather than the historical logos.
Idaho State's returning experience makes this particular meeting more interesting. The Bengals went 5-3 in the Big Sky last season and return significant contributors throughout the roster, while Utah State is replacing important pieces offensively.
Utah State should ultimately win. The question is whether the Aggies create two touchdowns of separation.
Why the 61.5 Total Looks High
The 61.5 total is relatively aggressive considering Utah State is making its season debut with significant offensive turnover.
For the Over to cash, something like 38-24 gets us there at 62. A 35-27 result also reaches 62. Those scores aren't unreasonable, particularly given Idaho State's offensive experience.
But there are plenty of competitive game scripts that stay Under. Utah State 34-24 produces 58. Utah State 34-27 produces 61. Even a 37-24 game lands at exactly 61.
That's a considerable amount of scoring without getting beyond the total.
The Under also provides some protection if Utah State's new offensive pieces need time to settle in. The Aggies can control the game physically without necessarily scoring into the 40s.
Idaho State vs Utah State Picks and Prediction
Pick: Idaho State +13.5
I'm taking Idaho State +13.5. Utah State deserves to be favored and should have the better chance of winning outright, but the Bengals are considerably more experienced than the typical FCS opponent. Idaho State went 6-6 and 5-3 in the Big Sky last season and returns significant production on both sides of the football. The Bengals have also already played, while Utah State is making its season debut with only four returning offensive starters. If Idaho State's experienced offense can reach somewhere into the 20s, the Aggies may have difficulty creating two touchdowns of separation. Something around Utah State 34, Idaho State 27 gives the home team the expected victory while comfortably cashing the underdog. Take Idaho State +13.5.
Pick: Under 61.5
I'll also take Under 61.5. This number gives us room for both offenses to have productive afternoons without requiring a defensive battle. A 34-27 Utah State victory produces exactly 61 points and remains Under, while 34-24 gives us a little more breathing room. Utah State is opening the season with significant offensive turnover, while Idaho State's best route to covering involves sustained possessions that shorten the game and prevent the Aggies from repeatedly getting the football. Under 61.5 is the total pick.
Final Picks: Idaho State +13.5 and Under 61.5
