Illinois Faces Its First Major Road Examination

Illinois has been able to begin the season without leaving home, but that changes dramatically Saturday. Traveling to Columbus for the first road game represents one of the most difficult environmental jumps possible, particularly against an Ohio State team playing at an elite defensive level.

Illinois cannot approach this game as though it needs to match Ohio State possession for possession offensively. The better path is controlling tempo, avoiding turnovers and keeping the Buckeyes from creating the avalanche of short fields and explosive scoring opportunities that often decide games at Ohio Stadium.

The Illini also have rivalry history on their side as motivation. Illinois last won the Illibuck Trophy in 2007, when it stunned the nation’s top-ranked Buckeyes. That history won’t determine Saturday’s outcome, but it reinforces that this is more than an ordinary road conference game.

Ohio State Is Dominating Defensively

Ohio State’s 59-3 victory over Kent State was exactly what should be expected from an elite team against an overmatched opponent. The Buckeyes overwhelmed Kent State immediately and never allowed the game to become competitive.

More important than the margin was the continued defensive dominance. Ohio State has the personnel to force Illinois into long-yardage situations and make sustained drives difficult. If the Buckeyes consistently win first down defensively, Illinois could spend much of the afternoon battling poor field position.

The potential issue for bettors is the eventual spread. Ohio State may be clearly superior without necessarily being attractive at an enormous number against a disciplined Big Ten opponent. Illinois should provide significantly more resistance than Kent State.

Ohio State is the stronger team, but this is exactly where price matters. Illinois is a conference opponent with a more credible defensive structure than the teams Ohio State can simply overwhelm physically. If the market provides more than 17 points, I’ll take the Illini to remain inside the number even if Ohio State controls the game.

Pick: Under 52.5 or Higher

Illinois’ best strategy is shortening this game, while Ohio State’s defense gives the Buckeyes an opportunity to suppress the visiting offense. That combination favors the under. A score such as 31-13 or 34-14 still gives Ohio State a comfortable victory while remaining beneath a total in the low 50s.
