Jacksonville State Leans on the Running Game
Jacksonville State opened its season with an impressive 31-24 victory over UAB. The Gamecocks generated 422 total yards and did most of their damage on the ground, piling up 282 rushing yards while averaging 5.6 yards per carry.
Caden Creel completed 12 of 19 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown while adding 52 rushing yards. Cam Cook led the Gamecocks with 118 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, while Tre Stewart contributed 79 yards on the ground. Jacksonville State’s ability to rotate productive runners made it difficult for UAB to consistently get the offense behind schedule.
The concern entering Athens is Jacksonville State’s pass defense. UAB threw for 287 yards and remained within one possession late in the game. The Gamecocks compensated by controlling the football with their rushing attack, but Ohio should present another difficult challenge if Jacksonville State can’t generate enough pressure on passing downs.
Ohio Starts Strong at Home
Ohio opened its season with a 31-17 victory over Akron, using a balanced offensive attack and a strong second half to create separation. The Bobcats generated 397 total yards and rushed for 201 while controlling the ball for more than 34 minutes.
Parker Navarro completed 17 of 25 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns while also contributing on the ground. Anthony Tyus III led Ohio with 92 rushing yards and a touchdown, giving the Bobcats another way to control the pace of the game. Ohio finished with 24 first downs and converted consistently enough on third down to sustain drives.
The Bobcats’ defensive performance was also encouraging. Akron struggled to consistently establish its rushing attack, allowing Ohio to dictate the matchup and force more predictable passing situations. That run defense will be tested much more severely by Jacksonville State, which enters after rushing for 282 yards against UAB.
Jacksonville St. vs Ohio Picks and Prediction
Pick: Jacksonville State +4.5
Jacksonville State +4.5 is my preferred side. Ohio deserves to be favored at Peden Stadium, but more than a field goal provides value with a Jacksonville State team capable of controlling possession with its rushing attack. The Gamecocks produced 282 rushing yards against UAB and have multiple runners capable of creating explosive plays. Ohio should have offensive success of its own, but Jacksonville State’s ability to shorten the game and consistently move the chains makes 4.5 points valuable. Take Jacksonville State +4.5.
Pick: Over 52.5
The Over 52.5 is my preferred total. Jacksonville State scored 31 while producing 422 yards in its opener, and Ohio also reached 31 points behind a balanced offense. The Gamecocks allowed 287 passing yards against UAB, while Ohio’s defense now faces a substantially stronger rushing attack than it saw against Akron. Both teams have legitimate paths into the upper 20s, making something around 30-27 or 31-27 a reasonable expectation. Take Over 52.5.
Final Picks: Jacksonville State +4.5 and Over 52.5
