James Madison vs San Diego State Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 19 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 09/13/2026, 11:59 PM ET

The James Madison Dukes travel to Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California, to face the San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 PM ET with coverage on The CW. San Diego State opened the season with a dominant 53-20 victory over Portland State before traveling to UCLA, while James Madison now heads across the country for one of the more intriguing late-night nonconference games on Saturday's schedule. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Be sure to check out our free college football picks for more NCAAF predictions throughout the season.

James Madison Gets a Difficult Cross-Country Test

James Madison has established itself as a program capable of competing immediately against quality FBS opposition, and Saturday provides another opportunity to demonstrate that ability. The Dukes must travel almost completely across the country to San Diego, creating one of the more challenging logistical spots on the Week 3 schedule.

The matchup itself should be competitive. James Madison has built its success around physical football and avoiding the type of mistakes that allow opponents to create easy separation. That approach becomes particularly important against San Diego State because the Aztecs demonstrated in their opener that they can quickly punish a defense once they establish offensive momentum.

Travel is the biggest handicap against James Madison. A 10:00 PM ET kickoff means the Dukes will essentially be playing deep into the night according to their normal body clock. That doesn't automatically eliminate them from consideration, but it gives San Diego State an advantage in a matchup that otherwise appears relatively balanced.

San Diego State Gets a Valuable Home-Field Advantage

San Diego State's season-opening 53-20 victory over Portland State provided plenty of reasons for optimism. The Aztecs established control offensively and demonstrated that they could produce explosive scoring rather than relying exclusively on defense and field position.

The schedule became substantially more difficult with the Week 2 trip to UCLA, and James Madison represents another quality opponent. San Diego State therefore doesn't get much of an early-season break, but returning to Snapdragon Stadium should be valuable. The Aztecs won't have to deal with the travel burden facing the Dukes.

This looks much more like a competitive fourth-quarter game than a matchup where either side should be laying a large number. San Diego State gets my slight advantage because of location and travel, but James Madison is too capable to justify laying much beyond a field goal.

James Madison vs San Diego State Picks and Prediction

Pick: San Diego State -2.5 or Better

Take San Diego State if the spread is -2.5 or better. James Madison is good enough to keep this competitive, but traveling across three time zones for a 10:00 PM ET kickoff creates a meaningful situational disadvantage. San Diego State already showed substantial offensive upside in its home opener, and I'll back the Aztecs as long as we don't have to cross the key number of three.

Pick: Under 52.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 52.5 or higher. James Madison should be much more difficult to score against than Portland State, while the Dukes have little incentive to turn a cross-country road game into a high-possession shootout. A projected San Diego State 27, James Madison 21 gives the Aztecs the cover while keeping the game below the target total.

Final Picks: San Diego State -2.5 or Better and Under 52.5
