Key Matchups for JMU vs. Oregon

Huge chance for Dukes

James Madison is in quite a position where they made the CFP in a somewhat shocking move, but then lost head coach Bob Chesney to UCLA. Chesney will coach this playoff game and if they lose, former Florida coach Billy Napier will take over. The Dukes' only loss this season came at Louisville, 28-14, on Sept. 5. Most of their games were blowouts in the Sun Belt, as the only close contest came against Washington State (24-20) on Nov. 22.

This is a team that wants to run the football to set up the pass. QB Alonza Barnett is a dual-threat quarterback who has rushed for 544 yards and 14 TDs, while throwing for 2,533 yards (59.9%), 21 TDs, and eight picks. RB Wayne Knight leads JMU with 1,263 yards (6.6ypc) and nine TDs. He's also a dangerous kick and punt returner. Defensively, LB Trent Hendrick leads the team with 96 tackles, adding three sacks and one forced fumble. CB Justin Eaglin leads i npicks with four and has a TD.

JMU ranks 84th in turnover margin at -0.2.

Ducks can't afford to look ahead

Oregon did get a nice draw here to play a team from the Sun Belt and host the playoff game. Their only loss this season came against No. 1 playoff seed Indiana, 30-20, from Eugene on Oct. 11. The Ducks rebounded to win six straight games, including five by double digits and one of those wins came against then-No. 15 USC 42-27, on Nov. 22. They finished the regular season with a 26-14 win over Washington on the road as a 6.5-point favorite.

Statistically, Oregon is in the top 10 in rushing yards per game (238.3), points per game (41.6), total yards per game (505.5, 1st), total yards allowed (274.5), and passing yards allowed (274.5ypg). QB Dante Moore has had an outstanding season with 2,733 yards passing (72.5%), 24 TDs, and six picks. He's been sacked just 12 times and has 191 rushing yards. Noah Whittington leads the ground attack with 774 yards and six TDs (6.9ypc). LB Bruce Boeetcher leads the Ducks in tackles with 104, adding one pick, one sack, and one forced fumble.

JMU:

  • 5-2 Over last 7 games.

Oregon:

  • 10-5 ATS last 15 games.
  • 19-1 SU last 20 at home.
  • 1-4 ATS last 5 in December.

JMU vs. Oregon Final Score Prediction

  • Oregon 34-JMU 20

The line is understandable due to the different conferences, but this is a JMU team with tremendous confidence that they can hang with the Ducks due to a strong rushing attack. In their loss to Louisville, Dukes had the ball for over 37 minutes and held the Cardinals to just 12 first downs. Louisville scored on a fourth-quarter fumble in the end zone as Barnett III was sacked in the end zone. They also committed 12 penalties to help Louisville's cause. They were right there with Louisville even with the crucial mistakes. Expect a close game with more offense in this one. JMU has gone over in five of their last seven games. They average 37.3 points per game, while Oregon is averaging 42 points per game at home.
