Kent State Steps Into Another Massive Talent Mismatch

Kent State's first two games illustrate the enormous difference between competing against comparable opposition and stepping up against an elite Power Four roster. The Golden Flashes were overwhelmed 57-0 by South Carolina in their opener before responding with a much better 36-15 victory over Wofford.

That rebound matters because Kent State at least enters Columbus having generated some offensive confidence. The Golden Flashes can't reasonably expect to match Ohio State possession for possession, but establishing a few sustained drives could prevent the Buckeyes from spending the entire afternoon operating with short fields. Avoiding turnovers is particularly important against a favorite capable of turning mistakes into touchdowns almost immediately.

The South Carolina result remains the biggest warning sign. Kent State already faced one major talent mismatch and lost by 57 without scoring. Ohio State possesses at least a comparable talent advantage and now enters the matchup angry after a devastating defeat. Kent State will need substantial improvement merely to keep the margin manageable.

Ohio State Has Every Reason to Respond Aggressively

Ohio State's 24-23 loss at Texas was one of the most stunning results of Week 2 because of how it happened. The Buckeyes appeared headed toward a major road victory before allowing a 20-point fourth-quarter advantage to disappear. Instead of returning to Columbus with a statement victory, Ohio State now has to respond to its first defeat.

That creates an unpleasant motivational setup for Kent State. This isn't an undefeated Ohio State team coming home from an emotional victory and potentially looking ahead. The Buckeyes have spent the week confronting what went wrong in Austin, and Kent State provides an opportunity to immediately restore confidence on both sides of the football.

Ohio State should have overwhelming advantages in depth, speed and line play. The only serious handicapping question is whether the Buckeyes continue attacking after the game has effectively been decided. With a massive spread likely, fourth-quarter substitutions could determine the ATS result even if Ohio State dominates from beginning to end.

Kent State vs Ohio State Picks and Prediction

Pick: Ohio State -42.5 or Better

Take Ohio State if the spread is -42.5 or better. Kent State already lost 57-0 to South Carolina, establishing how vulnerable the Golden Flashes can be against elite competition. Ohio State is returning home after blowing a 20-point fourth-quarter lead at Texas, so motivation shouldn't be an issue. This becomes less attractive above seven touchdowns, but anything around six touchdowns keeps the Buckeyes playable.

Pick: Under 58.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 58.5 or higher. Ohio State may do nearly all the scoring required to threaten this number, but Kent State's offensive contribution is the concern. The Golden Flashes were shut out by South Carolina, and Ohio State should dominate defensively. A projected Ohio State 49, Kent State 7 produces a comfortable cover while narrowly staying below the target.

Final Picks: Ohio State -42.5 or Better and Under 58.5
