Flashes looking for inspiration
A combination of instability on the bench and a formidable opening schedule has left Kent State (2-4, 1-1 in MAC play) with some big losses on its record to start the year. The Golden Flashes went into 2025 with Mark Carney running the team on an interim basis after Kennie Burns was fired in April. They had to face AP-ranked Texas Tech, Florida State and Oklahoma inside their opening five games and lost all three by a combined margin of 148 points.
There was some cheer in Week 7 as the team crushed UMass 42-6 to get off the mark in conference play, aided by a standout game from Dru DeShields. The quarterback threw for 148 yards and four TDs, a strong return after Kent State made the curious decision to scratch him from the Oklahoma game and paid the price as it failed to record a single point.

DeShields leads MAC quarterbacks with nine TDs, 8.5 yards per attempt and 14.6 yards per completion while having given up just a single interception through five starts. He has also got over the line for two rushing TDs. Cade Wolford has been DeShields' most reliable receiver with 10 completions for 242 yards and four TDs.
Rockets struggle to start year
Toledo (3-3, 1-2 in MAC play) suffered a big setback last time out as it went down to rival Bowling Green to suffer its second MAC loss in its first three games of the 2025 conference season. The Rockets were beaten out 28-23 by the Falcons and had previously lost a 14-13 nailbiter to Western Michigan on the road, meaning their only win in MAC play to date was a 45-3 blowout over Akron at the Glass Bowl in September. It is not what long-time head coach Jason Candie expected after seeing his team predicted to lead the MAC in the preseason coaches' poll while also receiving votes in AP's Top 25 preseason ranking.
The Rockets will need more from the quarterback position if they are to turn the corner. Starter Tucker Gleason was disappointed in the two conference losses, completing 19-30 attempts against Bowling Green with a crucial interception when Toledo was looking to tie, and picking up just 89 yards on 15 completions (50% success rate) in the Western Michigan game, giving up two further picks. The Rockets' playcalling on third down has also been suspect in those big games, converting 3-13 on third down vs. Western Michigan and 5-18 against the Falcons, who also benefited from 109 penalty yards given up by Toledo on 13 flags.
Kent State vs. Toledo pick
Spread Pick for Kent State vs. Toledo
- Kent State +26.5 (5 units)
Toledo has a huge spread to cover on Saturday, and I can't see it mustering enough offense to get almost four scores ahead of Kent State, given its recent struggles. The Rockets are completing 33.8% of third-down attempts in 2025 (105th in FBS) and score on 76.4% of their visits to the red zone, ranking 100th in college football. They are also giving up far too many penalty yards, an average of 82.2 yards per game, which is the fifth-worst mark of any FBS team, and interceptions, at a rate of one per game. Kent State's defense averages 0.8 picks and will hope to take advantage. Toledo should win this game easily, but covering looks like a bridge too far for the home team.
Take the Golden Flashes.
Over/Under Pick for Kent State vs. Toledo
- Over 51 (5 units)
I like the over for this game. Kent State's overall offensive figures look modest, but that is skewed by those three blowouts against nationally ranked opponents. Remove those games, and the Flashes are scoring at a rate of 30.3 points per game and with DeShields emerging as a talent at QB, they will hope to put up a big score against Toledo. The Rockets will also look to do damage against a weak visiting defense. It averages 418.2 yards per game (38th in FBS) and is scoring 50 ppg at home this year, going 2-1 on the over. There should be lots of opportunities on the ground: Toledo averages 194.8 rushing yards/G (25th in FBS) while Kent State allows 221.2 rushing yards (129th of 136 teams).
Take the over.
