Florida International Panthers vs. UConn Huskies Picks and Prediction

The Lafayette Leopards travel to East Hartford to face the UConn Huskies on Saturday, September 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut. UConn will be opening its 2026 season at home against an FCS opponent, while Lafayette gets an opportunity to test itself against FBS competition. The current market has UConn favored by approximately 18.5 to 19.5 points, while the total is ranging from 56.5 to 58.5 depending on the sportsbook. Lafayette Gets Plenty of Points

Lafayette's primary advantage from a betting perspective is straightforward: the Leopards are receiving nearly three touchdowns.

That gives Lafayette room to absorb a difficult stretch without immediately losing contact with the spread. The Leopards don't need to seriously threaten UConn for the outright victory; they need to keep the Huskies from generating four-score separation.

Lafayette's best approach should be controlling possession and preventing UConn from creating repeated explosive plays. Every long possession reduces the opportunities available to the favorite.

The Leopards also have to convert scoring opportunities when they appear. Settling for zero points after reaching UConn territory could eventually become costly against a spread near 20.

UConn Begins a New Season at Home

UConn enters 2026 trying to build on several encouraging seasons and gets an FCS opponent at home to begin the campaign.

The Huskies went 7-6 against the spread last season and won eight of the 10 games in which they were moneyline favorites. That indicates UConn generally handled the games it was expected to win, although covering large spreads was a different matter.

Current power-rating analysis also raises questions about laying the number. One model makes UConn only a 13.5-point favorite, while another SP+ based projection sits around UConn -12. That is a meaningful difference from a sportsbook line approaching -20.

The Huskies should still have the physical advantage and should win the game. Betting value, however, is a different question.

Lafayette vs UConn Picks and Prediction

Pick: Lafayette +19.5

Lafayette +19.5 is the preferred side. UConn deserves to be favored at home, but the analytical numbers I found don't support laying nearly 20 points. One projection makes UConn -13.5, while an SP+ number is closer to -12. That gives us roughly six to seven points of theoretical value on the underdog at +19.5. A score around UConn 31, Lafayette 17 produces a comfortable Huskies victory while easily covering for Lafayette. Take Lafayette +19.5, with +18.5 still playable but noticeably less attractive.

Pick: Under 58.5

At the higher available number, Under 58.5 is the preferred total. UConn should control much of the matchup, but asking these teams to combine for nearly 60 points creates a relatively high bar. Lafayette staying inside the spread also fits a slower game in which the Leopards shorten possessions. A 31-17, 34-17 or 35-14 result all stays beneath 58.5. Take Under 58.5, although I would be more cautious if the market falls substantially below 56.

Final Picks: Lafayette +19.5 and Under 58.5
