LIU Faces a Difficult FBS Road Assignment

LIU heads to Miami knowing the physical challenge will be substantially different from a typical FCS matchup. The Sharks need to withstand FIU’s size advantage at the line of scrimmage while preventing the Panthers from creating a comfortable early lead.

The formula for LIU is to shorten the game. Long possessions, a dependable rushing attack and avoiding negative plays would prevent FIU from maximizing its depth advantage. Turnovers would be especially damaging because the Sharks cannot afford to hand an FBS opponent additional possessions or short fields.

LIU can take encouragement from FIU’s offensive inconsistency. The Panthers scored only nine points against South Florida and 10 against Florida Atlantic. If LIU can force another uneven offensive performance, a large underdog spread could remain in play deep into the second half.

FIU Returns to Miami Looking for Offensive Improvement

FIU’s 1-2 record tells an interesting story. The Panthers struggled offensively in a 19-9 loss to South Florida, responded with a strong 33-20 home victory over Buffalo, and then fell 16-10 at Florida Atlantic. Through three games, FIU has therefore scored 52 points and allowed 55.

The Buffalo victory is the performance FIU wants to reproduce. The Panthers scored 33 points in their only home game, and returning to Pitbull Stadium against an FCS opponent creates an excellent opportunity to rebuild offensive confidence. FIU should be able to establish the line of scrimmage and create more manageable down-and-distance situations than it faced in its two road losses.

The defensive results have generally been solid. FIU has allowed 19, 20 and 16 points, never surrendering more than 20 in a game. Against LIU, that defense should give the Panthers a chance to create substantial separation even if the offense does not produce an explosive performance.
