One week later, the competition changed dramatically and LSU handed Louisiana Tech a 45-14 defeat.

The LSU game is more useful for evaluating Saturday because Baylor represents another Power Four opponent. Louisiana Tech couldn't consistently finish possessions against the Tigers and eventually surrendered separation despite LSU committing multiple turnovers. The Bulldogs now have to regroup quickly and travel again rather than returning to Ruston for a softer matchup.

Louisiana Tech does have reason for confidence beyond its 1-1 start. The Bulldogs went 8-5 last season and won the Independence Bowl, producing their first winning season since 2019. This isn't a program entering Waco simply hoping to survive. Still, the difference between competing successfully in the Sun Belt and beating a Big 12 opponent on the road remains substantial.

Baylor Has the Matchup Advantage at McLane Stadium

Baylor is also 1-1, but this matchup gives the Bears an opportunity to build momentum before the schedule becomes more demanding. ESPN's current matchup model gives Baylor an overwhelming advantage, which reflects the talent disparity between a Big 12 roster playing at home and a Louisiana Tech team coming directly from a difficult game at LSU.

The Bears should attack the same issues LSU exposed. Louisiana Tech surrendered 45 points and now has to deal with another offense capable of using its size advantage to control the line of scrimmage. Baylor doesn't need to generate immediate explosive plays if it can consistently win early downs and force the Bulldogs' defense to remain on the field.

The Bears should gradually create separation, although I wouldn't want to lay much more than three touchdowns.

Pick: Under 57.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 57.5 or higher. Louisiana Tech scored only 14 against LSU after its 80-point opener, demonstrating how dramatically its offensive ceiling changes against stronger defenses. Baylor should be capable of controlling the game without needing an extreme scoring output.
