Brian Kelly Out At LSU

The Brian Kelly era at LSU is officially over. After a 49-25 home loss to Texas A&M two weeks ago, the Tigers made the stunning decision to fire Kelly midway through his fourth season, eating one of the largest buyouts in college football history. Associate head coach and longtime recruiter Frank Wilson has stepped in as interim head coach, and his first assignment couldn’t be tougher: a trip to Tuscaloosa to face No. 4 Alabama. LSU enters at 5-3, losers of two straight, and the program is clearly in transition. Still, the Tigers have talent across the roster, and the question is whether the coaching shakeup provides a spark or if the team continues to slide.

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has had an uneven senior season. He threw for 168 yards and a touchdown against Texas A&M but was sacked five times and pulled late in the game as the offense sputtered. The ground game has been a disappointment, with freshman Harlem Berry showing flashes but the unit as a whole averaging just 106 rushing yards per game, one of the lowest marks in the SEC. Wideouts Barion Brown and Aaron Anderson have been reliable targets, but without consistent protection, the passing game has lacked rhythm. Wilson has emphasized simplifying the offense and leaning on quick throws to get Nussmeier comfortable, but against Alabama’s defense, execution will have to be near perfect.

Defensively, LSU has been the steadier side of the ball, allowing just under 19 points per game. Linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. remains the centerpiece, capable of wrecking plays with his speed and instincts, while safety Adari Haulcy has been a ballhawk in the secondary. The Tigers’ defense has kept them competitive even as the offense has faltered, but the challenge ramps up against Alabama’s balanced attack. LSU’s ability to generate pressure without blitzing will be critical, because leaving their secondary exposed against Ty Simpson and Alabama’s receivers is a dangerous gamble.

Bama Survives Scare From South Carolina

Alabama comes into this matchup at 7-1 and firmly in the College Football Playoff hunt. The Crimson Tide survived a scare in their last outing, edging South Carolina 29-22, but they’ve been one of the most consistent teams in the country this season. Quarterback Ty Simpson has been the steady hand guiding the offense, throwing for over 2,100 yards with 20 touchdowns and just one interception. His efficiency has been the difference-maker, and when paired with a deep receiving corps led by Germie Bernard and Ryan Williams, Alabama has the ability to stretch defenses vertically and punish mistakes.

The run game has been less dominant than in years past, but backs Jamarion Miller and Daniel Hill have provided enough balance to keep defenses honest. Alabama’s offensive line has been tested at times, particularly in short-yardage situations, but overall they’ve given Simpson the time he needs to operate. Against LSU, the Tide will likely look to establish rhythm through the air early, forcing the Tigers’ secondary into uncomfortable matchups. If they can build a lead, the ground game should be able to salt away the clock in the second half.

Defensively, Alabama has been outstanding, allowing just 18 points per game and ranking among the nation’s best in turnover margin. Linebackers Justin Jefferson and Yhonzae Pierre have been disruptive in the front seven, while defensive back Bray Hubbard has emerged as a playmaker with three interceptions. The Tide’s ability to pressure quarterbacks without blitzing gives them a huge advantage against LSU’s shaky offensive line. If Alabama can bottle up Harlem Berry and force Nussmeier into obvious passing downs, the Tide defense should control the game. Add in the home-field edge at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and Alabama looks well-positioned to extend its dominance in this rivalry.

LSU vs Alabama Pick

LSU vs Alabama Spread Pick

  • Alabama -10 (2 Units)

Alabama -10 makes sense because the Crimson Tide have been the steadier, more complete team all season, while LSU is still adjusting after the firing of Brian Kelly. Quarterback Ty Simpson has been sharp, throwing for over 2,100 yards with 20 touchdowns and just one interception, and he’s got a deep group of receivers led by Germie Bernard and Ryan Williams who can stretch the field. The ground game isn’t dominant, but Jamarion Miller and Daniel Hill provide enough balance to keep defenses honest. Against an LSU offense that has struggled to protect Garrett Nussmeier and establish a consistent rushing attack, Alabama’s ability to dictate tempo and capitalize on mismatches gives them a clear edge, especially at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Defensively, Alabama has been one of the best units in the country, allowing just over 18 points per game and ranking top-20 nationally in turnover margin. Linebackers Justin Jefferson and Yhonzae Pierre have been disruptive in the front seven, while defensive back Bray Hubbard has emerged as a playmaker with three interceptions. LSU’s defense is talented, but the Tigers’ offense has been too inconsistent to keep pace, and interim coach Frank Wilson is still trying to stabilize the program after Kelly’s departure. With Alabama’s defense capable of pressuring Nussmeier and forcing mistakes, and the offense efficient enough to build a lead, covering the 10-point spread feels realistic in a matchup where the Tide’s depth and stability should shine through.

LSU vs Alabama Over/Under Pick

  • Under 49.5 (3 Units)

The under 49.5 feels even stronger when you look at how these two teams match up stylistically. Alabama’s defense has been one of the most disciplined units in the country, holding opponents under 20 points per game and thriving on pressure without blitzing. LSU’s offense, meanwhile, has been inconsistent all season, struggling to protect Garrett Nussmeier and failing to establish a reliable run game. That combination makes it hard to imagine the Tigers suddenly breaking through against a defense of Alabama’s caliber.

On the other side, LSU’s defense is still a strength, anchored by Harold Perkins Jr., and it’s capable of slowing down Alabama enough to keep this from turning into a shootout. The Tigers may bend against Ty Simpson and Alabama’s receivers, but they’ve been resilient in the red zone and can force the Tide to settle for field goals. Add in the fact that the firing of Brian Kelly has left LSU in transition, which often leads to conservative play-calling, and this matchup sets up as a more controlled, grind-it-out game. With both defenses capable of tightening when it matters most, the total staying under 49.5 feels like the right angle.
