The LSU Tigers head to Auburn on Saturday for a matchup between two teams with identical SEC records. The game takes place at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with kickoff at 12:00 pm ET on ABC. LSU is ranked No. 18 nationally and sits seventh in the conference with a 5-2 overall record and a 2-2 mark in SEC play. LSU Has Plenty of Pressure Up Front
LSU had a much easier time against Mississippi State than it did at Kentucky the previous week. After losing by a point in overtime, the Tigers returned home and kept Mississippi State off the scoreboard in a 31-0 win. LSU also had little trouble beating Texas A&M 35-6 in September, although Ole Miss handed the Tigers a 32-24 defeat on the road. Against McNeese, LSU scored a season-high 63 points. The offense has collected 3,528 yards through seven games, with 2,156 coming through the air. LSU's defense has been getting to opposing quarterbacks regularly, recording 27 sacks so far.
Sam Leavitt is completing 70.1% of his throws and has 1,785 passing yards. His 14 touchdowns have come with eight interceptions, something Auburn will be watching. Dilin Jones has carried 128 times for 566 yards and five scores. Leavitt also has seven rushing touchdowns, so stopping Jones alone won't settle things. Jackson Harris leads the receivers with 456 yards, just ahead of Winston Watkins Jr. at 447. Princewill Umanmielen has eight sacks, while TJ Dottery tops the defense with 52 tackles.
Injuries: Phillip Wright III and Dashawn Spears are out. R. Guillory Jr., Trey'Dez Green, Tre' Brown and T. Singleton are questionable.
Auburn Returns Home After Beating Georgia
Few expected Auburn to come away from Georgia with a win, but that's exactly what happened. The Tigers held on 27-24 and now get another ranked opponent at home. Their results have been difficult to predict. Before the Georgia victory came a 24-14 loss at Tennessee. Auburn beat Vanderbilt 21-15 the week before that and lost a wild 44-39 game against Florida. Auburn's offense has rushed for 1,092 yards, but passing the ball hasn't been nearly as productive. That matters with LSU's pass rush coming to town.
A lot of Auburn's offense starts with Byrum Brown's legs. The quarterback has run for 459 yards and five touchdowns, more rushing yards than anyone else on the roster. Throwing has brought mixed results: 1,205 yards, eight scores and seven interceptions. Jeremiah Cobb has added 306 rushing yards, and Omar Mabson II has 227. Keshaun Singleton leads the receiving group with 367 yards; Chas Nimrod has 333. Elijah Melendez has been busy on defense with 52 tackles and four sacks. Auburn has allowed 23 sacks, too, a concern against LSU.
Injuries: E. Smith and N. Davenport are out. H. Herring is questionable.
Key To The Game
Brown can hurt LSU by running, but the Auburn line has surrendered 23 sacks. LSU has recorded 27, including eight by Umanmielen. Auburn must keep Brown from spending the afternoon scrambling away from pressure. LSU also needs Leavitt to cut down on interceptions.
LSU vs Auburn Game Pick
- LSU Tigers -7.5
Auburn's win at Georgia deserves attention, but LSU presents a different problem along the defensive line. The Tigers have 27 sacks, and Auburn has given up 23. Brown brings a rushing threat, although seven interceptions make him vulnerable when pressured. LSU also has Jones to help control the ball. This won't be as comfortable as last week's shutout, but LSU will win and cover the 7.5-point spread on Saturday afternoon.
LSU vs Auburn Over/Under Pick
- Over 50.5
LSU has scored at least 31 points in three of its last four games. Auburn recently put up 39 against Florida and scored 27 at Georgia. Both teams have quarterbacks who can take off and run near the goal line. There will be defensive stops, especially from LSU's front, but there are enough scoring options to push the combined points higher. The game will finish over the 50.5-point total on Saturday.
