Thundering Herd Trying to Get to .500

The Marshall Thundering Herd are getting ready to continue improving on the offensive side of the ball as they are coming off a 38-7 home win over the FCS Eastern Kentucky Colonials. Marshall’s offense was led by quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, who has been able to complete 9-of-12 passes for 118 yards with a pair of passing touchdowns to begin the season. Their total offense stands at 286.0 yards per game (124th in NCAA), with rushing accounting for an amazing 177.3 yards (62nd). The passing game has been one of the weakest in the country, with an average of 108.7 yards per game (132nd).

Defensively, the Thundering Herd have played well as they are allowing 354.7 total yards per game (78th), with their pass defense standing out as they are allowing a 55.7 completion percentage entering Week 4. Marshall has been a strong team and needs to continue to be aggressive if they want to improve on the offensive side of the ball.

Blue Raiders Searching for Offense

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders are looking to figure out how to get some wins as they are coming off a 14-13 road win over the Nevada Wolf Pack. Quarterback Nicholas Vattiato has held his own this year as he completed 62-of-111 passes for 548 yards with four touchdown passes to two interceptions thus far. As a team, they are ranked 99th nationally in passing yards, averaging 188.0 per game. Middle Tennessee’s total offense, which averages 248.7 yards per game (132nd) , will need to find new ways to maintain its efficiency. The rushing game, contributing only 60.7 yards per game (135th nationally), needs to at least provide some threat to open things up down the field.

The Blue Raiders’’ defense, allowing an average of 382.7 total yards per game (94th), has been their strength this season. Their pass defense, in particular, has been impressive, conceding only 214.0 yards per game (75th). Their rush defense, allowing 168.7  yards per game (106th), needs to tighten up if they want to get back to .500 this season.

Marshall Thundering Herd vs. Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders Pick

Spread Pick for Marshall vs. MTSU

  • Marshall Thundering Herd -150 (4 units)

The Marshall Thundering Herd have been a more effective overall team, even as they search for some offensive prowess. Marshall has been more disruptive with their pass defense as they have 11 pass deflections as well as three interceptions so far this year. These offenses are not doing too well, but Marshall looked like they may have turned a corner a bit with 38 points against Eastern Kentucky last week. All in all, go with the Marshall Thundering Herd to step up defensively and score just enough to win this game on the road.

Over/Under Pick for Marshall Thundering Herd at Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders

  • Under 45.5 (4 units)

These offenses are dreadful throughout the first few games and things are not looking to turn in their favor here. Both teams are struggling to move the chains on third down as the Thundering Herd are just 12-of-46 (26.09%) in their opportunities, while the Blue Raiders are 12-of-43 (27.91%). With Marshall trying to find an answer at quarterback to be just mediocre, they are not going to be moving the ball too much. These teams have seen the over hit one time between the two programs. Take under 45.5 total points to record the victory.
