Thundering Herd On a 4-1 Run

It was a chaotic offseason for the Marshall Thundering Herd, but the program weathered the storm, and first-year coach Tony Gibson has the team rolling heading into Week 10. The Thundering Herd are 4-3 overall, but those four wins have come in the last five games. A loss to Louisiana (54-51 2OT) is bookended by a pair of two-game winning streaks over Eastern Kentucky (38-7) and Middle Tennessee (42-28), and Old Dominion (48-24) and Texas State (40-37 2OT), more recently. Marshall is 2-1 in Sun Belt play, and they have the fourth-shortest odds (+1500) to win the conference title. As for the game-by-game betting numbers, the Herd are 5-2 ATS and 5-2 to the over.

In terms of personnel, it’s Carlos Del Rio-Wilson leading the offense at quarterback. The junior has looked sharp, throwing for 1,133 yards on a 74.4% completion rate, adding 12 touchdowns and one interception. Del Rio-Wilson is also the team’s leading rusher with 347 yards and four touchdowns on 84 carries (4.1 YPC). RB Michael Allen is the top back with 310 yards and three touchdowns on 58 totes (5.3 YPC). Out wide, WR Demarcus Lacey (484 yards, 4 TD) and TE Toby Payne (312 yards, 2 TD) are the main targets in the passing attack.

  • Offensively, the Thundering Herd are scoring 34.7 points per game (18th), while averaging 390.7 yards per week (59th).
  • Defensively, they are 119th in the country this year, conceding 34.8 points per game. They’re allowing 465.5 yards per contest, which is 128th.

Chanticleers Win Second Straight Game

This is the third season that Coach Tim Beck has been in charge of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers football program, and he entered the campaign with a record of 14-12 (8-8 SB). His Chanticleers are off to a respectable 4-3 start, which includes their 3-1 mark in conference play. Their lone conference loss came at the hands of Old Dominion (47-7), but Coastal has since bounced back with a pair of wins over UL Monroe (23-8) and Appalachian State (45-37), more recently. On Oct. 18, the rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat the Mountaineers. The Chanticleers enter the weekend at 3-4 ATS and 4-3 to the over. Samari Collier threw for 118 yards with a TD and ran for 73 yards against App State.

It has been quarterback-by-committee this year for Coastal Carolina, but Samari Collier has recently stepped up and earned the starting role. The senior has thrown for only 155 yards on a 50% completion rate, adding two touchdowns and one pick. He has another 162 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. RB Ja’Vin Simpkins has spearheaded the rushing attack, gaining 360 yards and two touchdowns on 61 carries (5.9 YPC). Clearly, the passing attack isn’t overpowering, which is further exemplified by the fact that WR Bryson Graves is the lead receiver with 158 yards.

  • Coastal Carolina’s offense has been underwhelming this season, ranking 105th in scoring (20.0 PPG), while putting up 293.0 yards per game (126th).
  • On the defensive side, the Chanticleers are 110th, allowing 33.0 points per game. In terms of yardage, they’re 124th, conceding 452.5 yards per contest.
  • LB Shane Bruce, who is third on the team in tackles with 34 and also tied for first in picks with two, is listed as doubtful with an undisclosed injury.

Marshall vs. Coastal Carolina Pick

Spread Pick for Marshall vs. Coastal Carolina

  • Marshal Thundering Herd -4.5 (-115) (5 units)

This should be a fun game to get the weekend started, but when the dust settles on Thursday night, I think it’ll be Marshall that emerges with a victory, and more importantly, a cover. The Thundering Herd are rolling, winning four of their last five games, with three of those wins coming by 14+ points. Dating back to last season, Marshall is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 games overall, and 6-1 ATS in its last seven road contests. Coastal is just 6-12 ATS in its last 18 games.

From a gameplay perspective, I simply don’t trust Coastal Carolina’s offense to keep pace with Marshall. They’re riding with QB Samari Collier, and he brings in a 50.0% completion rate on just 34 pass attempts this season. Both offenses should find success, but I would prefer to side with Marshall’s Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, who has a 74.4% completion rate and a 12/1 TD/INT ratio. Let’s back the red-hot Herd to cover this number.

Over/Under Pick for Marshall vs. Coastal Carolina

  • Over 53.5 (-115) (5 units)

To further elaborate on my Marshall pick, and start the analysis on why I like the over, is because the Thundering Herd are rolling offensively. During their current 4-1 SU stretch, the Herd are averaging an insane 43.8 points per game. They’ll be tasked with moving the ball on a Coastal Carolina defense that’s conceding 33.0 points per game (110th) and over 450 yards per contest.

Meanwhile, the Marshall defense hasn’t exactly been lights out either. They’ve allowed 24+ points in four straight games. With two questionable defenses, I think it’s best to play the over. The over is 6-3 in Coastal Carolina’s last nine outings and 4-1 in Marshall’s last five games.
