Marshall Found a Way to Respond at Home

Marshall desperately needed a victory after being shut out 45-0 at Penn State in its opener, and the Thundering Herd got one Saturday with a 28-26 win over Middle Tennessee. It wasn't a dominant performance, but getting into the win column was important after an opener in which Marshall couldn't generate any offensive momentum. The Herd now make their second road trip in three games with an opportunity to move above .500.

The improvement from Week 1 to Week 2 is significant when handicapping this matchup. Penn State presented a massive talent disadvantage and held Marshall scoreless, while Middle Tennessee gave the Herd a much more realistic opportunity to establish their offense. Scoring 28 points was encouraging, but allowing 26 also showed why Marshall shouldn't automatically be treated as a comfortable road favorite against Missouri State.

The key Saturday will be preventing Missouri State from building confidence at home. Marshall has faced the more demanding early schedule and should benefit from those experiences, but the Herd cannot afford to play as loosely as they did in a two-point victory last week. If Marshall controls field position and avoids turnovers, its experience against Penn State and Middle Tennessee should provide enough of an edge to gradually take control.

Missouri State Gets Its Second Straight Home Opportunity

Missouri State's season began with one of the most difficult assignments imaginable. The Bears traveled to College Station and were overwhelmed 50-0 by Texas A&M, a result that revealed very little about how competitive Missouri State might be against teams closer to its own level. Returning home against Lindenwood gave the Bears a much more realistic opportunity to evaluate their progress, and Missouri State responded by earning its first victory.

The Bears now remain at Robert W. Plaster Stadium for a much more significant test against an FBS opponent. This is also Missouri State's second season competing at the FBS level, so games like this carry additional importance as the program continues establishing itself. Marshall isn't Texas A&M, and the Bears should have considerably more opportunities to sustain drives and create scoring chances than they did in College Station.

Home field gives Missouri State a legitimate chance to make this competitive. Marshall needed all four quarters to get past Middle Tennessee, and nothing about the Herd's first two performances suggests they should be laying an enormous road number. The Bears' challenge is proving their improvement against Lindenwood wasn't simply the product of stepping down in competition. If Missouri State protects the football and keeps Marshall from generating explosive plays, this has the potential to remain a one-possession game deep into the second half.

Pick: Missouri State +7.5 or Better

Take Missouri State if the Bears are getting +7.5 or better. Marshall is my slight straight-up preference because the Herd have faced the stronger early schedule and just earned a 28-26 victory over Middle Tennessee, but they haven't shown enough dominance to justify laying more than a touchdown on the road. Missouri State is coming off its first victory and gets another game at Robert W. Plaster Stadium. Once the number moves through seven, the home underdog becomes the better betting position.

Pick: Over 51.5

Take the Over if the total is set at 51.5 or lower. Marshall's Week 2 game produced 54 combined points, which is much more relevant to this matchup than either team's blowout loss against nationally ranked competition. Missouri State should have considerably more offensive success against Marshall than it managed at Texas A&M, while the Herd demonstrated against Middle Tennessee that their offense can produce points against comparable competition. A projected Marshall 30, Missouri State 27 gives the Herd a narrow outright victory while cashing Missouri State against the target spread and pushing the game Over.
