Marshall vs Penn State Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 5 2026
Marshall travels to Happy Valley to face No. 18 Penn State at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in the season opener for both programs. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET on FS1, and Penn State will hold its annual Stripe Out for the first game of the Matt Campbell era. The Nittany Lions are currently favored by 24.5 points at ESPN's listed market, while the total has moved to approximately 52.5. Other sportsbooks are showing Penn State closer to -23.5, making shopping for the best Marshall number important. Get into the action with our free college football picks.
There is little question that Penn State should win this game. The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 18 nationally, have significant advantages in overall roster talent and depth, and get Marshall at Beaver Stadium. The more interesting betting question is whether Penn State should be required to win by approximately four touchdowns in its first game under a new coaching staff. Marshall can lose decisively and still cover +24.5.
Marshall Gets More Than Three Touchdowns
Marshall enters the season as a substantial road underdog, and the preseason numbers demonstrate the size of the challenge. The Thundering Herd is No. 98 in ESPN's preseason SP+ ratings, leaving a significant gap between these programs before we even account for Penn State playing at home.
That doesn't automatically mean Penn State covers. Marshall +24.5 gives the Thundering Herd more than three touchdowns of protection. A 35-14 Penn State victory is a comfortable three-score win for the Nittany Lions but still gives Marshall bettors a 3.5-point cushion. Even 38-14 leaves the Herd covering by half a point.
The biggest requirement for Marshall is avoiding the catastrophic mistakes that turn a competitive first half into a blowout. Turnovers, special-teams mistakes and repeated three-and-outs would give Penn State the short fields necessary to quickly stretch the margin. Marshall needs to make the Nittany Lions consistently drive the field.
Penn State Begins a Completely New Era
This isn't simply another Penn State opener against a sizable underdog. Saturday marks the beginning of the Matt Campbell era, and the Nittany Lions have undergone considerable change since last season.
That makes laying more than three touchdowns slightly more complicated. Penn State may ultimately develop into a legitimate Big Ten contender, but the first game provides an opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate how its new pieces operate together under actual game conditions. Timing, communication and execution are rarely perfect immediately.
That possibility is reflected in the wide range of preseason score predictions. One recent Penn State-focused panel produced predictions of 24-10, 45-7 and 28-13. Two of those three results would cash Marshall +24.5 comfortably, while only the 45-7 projection would cover for Penn State. The disagreement demonstrates the uncertainty surrounding the Nittany Lions entering their opener.
Penn State Still Owns the Major Physical Advantage
None of the uncertainty surrounding a new coaching staff changes the basic talent comparison. Penn State should control the line of scrimmage and has substantially more depth than Marshall. If the Nittany Lions establish their running game and consistently win early downs defensively, Marshall could spend much of the afternoon dealing with poor field position.
Penn State also gets an energized Beaver Stadium crowd for the Stripe Out. This will be the 11th edition of the event, and the combination of a season opener and a new coaching era should create plenty of energy. Marshall's ability to survive the opening quarter may be one of the most important factors in determining whether +24.5 cashes.
The danger for Marshall bettors comes if Penn State creates separation early. A 17-0 or 21-0 start would force the Herd away from a conservative approach and give the Nittany Lions opportunities to attack obvious passing situations. Marshall needs to prevent the game from developing that way.
Penn State Doesn't Need a Blowout to Have a Successful Opener
This is an important distinction when laying 24.5 points. Penn State could play a strong football game, dominate most statistical categories and win comfortably without covering.
Consider a 35-14 final. Penn State would win by three touchdowns, probably control most of the afternoon and leave its coaching staff with plenty of positives. Marshall +24.5 would still cash easily.
Even 38-14 gives Marshall bettors the cover. Penn State needs to reach a margin of at least 25 points, meaning something like 38-13, 42-17 or 35-10 is required.
That becomes relevant late in the game. If Penn State leads 35-10 in the fourth quarter, the Nittany Lions have already accomplished virtually everything they need from the opener. The incentive to aggressively pursue additional points becomes considerably lower than it would be in a competitive conference game.
The Total Has Become More Attractive
The original total around 54.5 made the Over relatively difficult to support. The current ESPN number of 52.5 changes the calculation.
If Penn State reaches 38 points, Marshall needs only 15 to send the game Over 52.5. A 38-17 result produces 55 combined points while simultaneously cashing Marshall +24.5. Likewise, a 35-21 result reaches 56.
The concern is Penn State's defense. If Marshall struggles to reach double digits, the Nittany Lions may have to do almost all the scoring themselves. A 38-10 Penn State victory would remain Under despite being a comfortable win.
That's why I still prefer the side to the total. Our Marshall spread ticket can survive an offensive struggle much more easily than the Over.
The Market Number Matters
This is one of those games where +24.5 and +23.5 are meaningfully different. At +24.5, a 38-14 Penn State victory cashes Marshall. At +23.5, the same final score loses.
That's enough for me to specifically target Marshall +24.5. I would be considerably less enthusiastic about taking the Herd if the market falls through 24.
The same principle applies to the total. Over 52.5 is playable. At the original 54.5, however, Marshall has to contribute more, and the margin for error shrinks. I would rather bet the current 52.5 than chase an Over into the mid-50s.
Marshall vs Penn State Picks and Prediction
Pick: Marshall +24.5
I'm taking Marshall +24.5. Penn State should win and has every reason to control this matchup, but the Nittany Lions are being asked to create more than three touchdowns of separation in their first game under a new coaching staff. Marshall doesn't need to threaten an upset. The Herd can lose 35-14 and cover comfortably, while 38-14 still gets us there by half a point. Recent Penn State-focused predictions have produced multiple projected margins well below the market number, reinforcing the possibility that the Nittany Lions win comfortably without turning this into a four-touchdown blowout. Marshall +24.5 is the side pick, but I specifically want the hook rather than settling for +23.5.
Pick: Over 52.5
I'll take Over 52.5 at the updated number. This is more attractive than the original 54.5 because Penn State should be capable of reaching the mid-to-upper 30s without needing a perfect offensive performance. Marshall reaching somewhere around 14 to 20 points then gives the Over a realistic path. A Penn State 38-17 final produces 55 points while cashing both of our selections. The biggest threat is Penn State completely shutting down the Marshall offense, so this remains the weaker of the two plays. Over 52.5 is playable; I would be much less interested if the total climbs back through 54.5.
Final Picks: Marshall +24.5 and Over 52.5
