Memphis 6-0 heading into Week 8
The Memphis Tigers are 6-0 overall, 2-0 in conference play, and 22nd in the AP Top 25 heading into their Week 8 road trip to UAB. They're only separated from the top of the conference standings by Navy, who're 4-0 in conference play and loom as a key opponent on the Tigers' schedule in late November. The Tigers are tied for 89th among FBS teams in passing yards with 211.5 per game, but they're 10th in rushing yards (238.7), 13th in points (40.5), and 16th in points allowed (16.2). Aside from their signature 32-31 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks in September, the Tigers have beaten each of their opponents by no fewer than 21 points en route to a 6-0 record both straight-up and against the spread.
Memphis enjoyed a bye in Week 7, but their most lopsided win of the season thus far is the 45-7 beatdown it put on Tulsa in Week 6. Memphis gained 457 yards on offense while allowing only 246 on defense, converted 28 first downs to Tulsa's 15, and won the turnover battle 4-2. Senior quarterback Brendon Lewis completed 22 of 30 passes for 266 yards, averaging 8.9 yards per attempt with a 73.3 completion percentage. He led the team on the ground with 67 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries; overall, the Tigers' ground game accounted for 191 yards and three touchdowns. The Tigers' defense made life difficult for Tulsa quarterback Kirk Francis–they secured three interceptions, defended six more passes, notched seven tackles for loss, and recovered the fourth turnover on a fumble. Memphis outscored Tulsa 17-0 in the second half, during which their defense didn't allow a drive of over 30 yards.

Memphis has played UAB each of the past two seasons–they've won, covered the spread, and hit the Team Total Over in both meetings. It isn't hard to imagine them doing it again for a third straight year.
Blazers fire Dilfer, enter Week 8 with league-worst scoring defense
The UAB Blazers enter Week 8 at 2-4 overall, 0-3 in conference play, 13th of 14 teams in the American Conference standings, and days removed from firing head football coach Trent Dilfer. Interrim head coach Alex Mortensen, who served as the offensive coordinator for each of Dilfer's three years at the helm of the team, is taking the reins of a group that's lost by three or more scores in each of their last three games.
Last week's loss to FAU was especially ugly–the Blazers fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter, ended the game over 150 yards behind the FAU offense, and lost an egregious 128 yards on 15 penalties. Solomon Beebe led the backfield with 34 yards and two touchdowns despite only taking four carries the entire game; the group finished with 68 yards on the ground, averaging only 2.4 yards per carry. The five sacks taken by quarterback Jalen Kitna didn't help those numbers, but he had a respectable day through the air when he was able to throw the ball–he completed 29 of 41 passes for 261 yards and a touchdown, completing 70.7 percent of his passes for 6.4 yards per attempt.
UAB ranks 16th among FBS teams in passing yards per game at an even 300.0, but they struggle at 119th in rushing yards (106.5), 58th in points (29.8), and 136th in points allowed (41.3). For clarity, that's 136th in points allowed out of 136 FBS teams–the Blazers are the worst scoring defense in college football, and they're staring down the barrel of a Memphis offense that ranks 13th with 40.5 points per game. Mortensen and first-year defensive coordinator Steve Russ have their work cut out for them.
Memphis vs. UAB pick
Spread Pick for Memphis vs. UAB
- Memphis -21.5 (-110) (5 Units)
Memphis is 6-0 against the spread heading into this matchup–they haven't been favored by as many as 21.5 since their season opener against Chattanooga, but it's a spread they would've covered in four of their six games. UAB has allowed more points per game than any other team in the FBS, and they're entering their first game under an interim head coach, Alex Mortensen, who has no experience as a head coach. The Tigers easily covered the spread against the Blazers in 2023 and 2024; I don't think this is the year that streak ends.
Over/Under Pick for Memphis vs. UAB
- Over 62.5 (-105) (4 Units)
The Team Total Over is 5-1 in UAB games this season, only falling short in their 31-13 loss to Army. They're bringing the worst scoring defense in the FBS to a meeting with one of the highest-scoring offenses in college football. Memphis is 2-0 in conference play after scoring 100 total points against FAU and Tulsa; UAB has scored at least 24 points in five of its six games. It would be shocking if these teams fell short of the total here, even with a line as high as 62.5 points.
