Mercer Has an Opportunity to Apply Real Pressure

Mercer won't enter this game expecting the talent advantages Georgia Tech normally possesses against an FCS opponent to simply disappear. The Bears will still be dealing with a deeper roster and more size across the line of scrimmage, but the psychological circumstances surrounding the matchup give Mercer a legitimate reason to believe it can make the afternoon uncomfortable.

The most important objective is surviving the first quarter. Heavy FCS underdogs often lose their opportunity to cover when the favorite scores multiple early touchdowns and turns the rest of the game into a depth contest. Mercer needs to sustain drives, avoid giveaways and force Georgia Tech to earn its points rather than providing short fields.

If the Bears can remain within striking distance into the second half, pressure increasingly shifts toward Georgia Tech. An 0-2 Power Four team playing at home against an FCS opponent is expected to win comfortably. Every possession Mercer keeps competitive increases the frustration level inside Bobby Dodd Stadium and makes a large underdog spread more valuable.

Georgia Tech Cannot Afford Another Poor Performance

Georgia Tech's season has begun in the worst possible fashion. The Yellow Jackets are 0-2, both defeats have come at Bobby Dodd Stadium, and a team that entered the year expecting to compete in the ACC instead finds itself searching for its first victory before conference play begins in earnest.

This is therefore more than an ordinary FCS tune-up. Georgia Tech needs a convincing performance to restore confidence. The Yellow Jackets should have major advantages in roster depth and athleticism, but simply possessing those advantages hasn't been enough to produce a victory through the first two games.

The matchup provides Georgia Tech an opportunity to simplify things offensively, establish control at the line of scrimmage and build a lead without needing to chase the game. The concern from a betting standpoint is laying a huge number with a favorite that hasn't yet demonstrated it can finish a game successfully. Georgia Tech should win, but covering a massive spread is a different question.

Mercer vs Georgia Tech Picks and Prediction

Pick: Mercer +28.5 or Better

Take Mercer if the Bears are getting +28.5 or better. Georgia Tech should win this game, but asking an 0-2 team to cover more than four touchdowns creates unnecessary risk. The Yellow Jackets need a clean victory far more than they need a spectacular margin. If Mercer protects the football and avoids allowing defensive or special-teams scores, the Bears can remain inside a large number.

Pick: Under 55.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 55.5 or higher. Georgia Tech's ideal game involves establishing control, building a comfortable advantage and avoiding the mistakes that contributed to its 0-2 start. Mercer should also prefer a slower contest that limits total possessions. A score around Georgia Tech 34, Mercer 13 gives the Yellow Jackets their first win while cashing both betting positions.

Final Picks: Mercer +28.5 or Better and Under 55.5
