Mercyhurst Finally Broke Through

Mercyhurst’s 1-3 record comes with substantial context. The Lakers opened with a 43-10 loss at Youngstown State, lost 51-14 at New Mexico State and were routed 70-7 at New Mexico before returning home and defeating Glenville State 49-20. That first win should provide some confidence, but Mercyhurst now steps back up against another FBS opponent.

The Glenville State game was Mercyhurst’s best all-around performance. The Lakers forced five turnovers, including three interceptions, and converted those mistakes into immediate scoring opportunities. That type of turnover production would dramatically improve their chances of remaining competitive in Bowling Green.

The concern is what happened in Mercyhurst’s previous games against stronger competition. New Mexico State scored 51 and New Mexico scored 70, meaning the Lakers allowed 121 points across their first two FBS road tests. Western Kentucky has struggled badly, but Mercyhurst’s defensive results against FBS opponents make this an ideal opportunity for WKU’s offense to regain confidence.

Western Kentucky Finally Gets Its Home Opener

Few teams have faced a more unforgiving opening schedule than Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers lost 49-14 at Nevada, 70-20 at No. 2 Georgia and 38-0 at No. 4 Indiana. WKU is 0-3, but all three games came on the road, and two were against top-four opponents.

The biggest concern is that even the Nevada matchup became one-sided. WKU allowed 486 total yards and 323 rushing yards in the 49-14 loss. The Hilltoppers then faced Georgia and Indiana, making it extremely difficult to establish any offensive rhythm. Mercyhurst represents a dramatic reduction in opponent quality and should provide WKU with its best scoring opportunities of the season.

This is also Western Kentucky’s first home game. After traveling to Reno, Athens and Bloomington on consecutive weekends, the Hilltoppers finally return to Bowling Green. Mercyhurst has already surrendered 43, 51 and 70 points in its three losses, so WKU has a legitimate chance to produce an offensive breakout.

Western Kentucky’s 0-3 record looks ugly, but context matters. Two losses came against Georgia and Indiana, while Mercyhurst has already been routed by New Mexico State and New Mexico. WKU finally gets home-field advantage and a substantial decline in competition. If the spread remains around three touchdowns, the Hilltoppers have enough matchup advantages to create separation.

Pick: Over 54.5 or Lower

Mercyhurst’s four games have produced combined totals of 53, 65, 77 and 69 points. The Lakers have allowed 184 points through four games, and Western Kentucky should have opportunities to post its best offensive number of the season.
