Stanford Faces a Brutal Six-Day Turnaround

Stanford's biggest situational disadvantage is obvious. The Cardinal open against Hawaii on Saturday, August 29, and then have only six days before facing Miami.

That is particularly challenging because Miami isn't simply another nonconference opponent. The Hurricanes beat Stanford by 35 points last season and enter the rematch with enough overall talent to punish a team that isn't physically prepared for four quarters.

There is one potential benefit for Stanford. The Cardinal will already have played a competitive game while Miami will be making its season debut. Stanford gets an opportunity to identify Week 0 problems and make immediate corrections before facing the Hurricanes.

One current expert projection makes Miami approximately a 31-point favorite, creating more than six points of theoretical value compared with the current -24.5 market. The cross-country trip creates some risk, and I would be reluctant to chase Miami much beyond -24.5, but the combination of preparation, depth and last season's matchup result makes the Hurricanes the play. Something around Miami 35, Stanford 10 would be enough to cover. Take Miami -24.5.

Pick: Under 48.5

The Under 48.5 is my preferred total. The market is already asking Miami to win comfortably while keeping the overall scoring expectation below 50, and that makes sense if Stanford struggles to generate offense against the Hurricanes. Miami doesn't necessarily need another 42-point performance to cover the spread. A 34-7, 35-10 or 38-7 result would all produce a Hurricanes cover while remaining below 48.5. Stanford's short turnaround could become increasingly important offensively as the game progresses, while Miami has little reason to turn its opener into an unnecessarily high-tempo contest after establishing control.
