Can Miami (OH) build on their first win of the year?
The Miami (OH) Redhawks struggled on both sides of the ball early in the season, but in their fourth game of the year they came to play, and now, they'll look to make it back-to-back wins as their season isn't going to get any easier moving forward. Through four games, the Redhawks offense has been surprisingly productive, ranking in the top-100 in the nation in total yards per game, yards per play and yards per rush, but with a defense that allowed 360 yards a game and 26 points, they've been unable to strike a balance thus far.
In 2025 thus far, Miami (OH) has struggled in the air, with their two starting quarterbacks combining for a 5/5 TD/INT ratio, and with just four total touchdowns on the ground, they need to build on the momentum that they began a week ago. Last time out for the Redhawks was a dominant victory over FCS Lindenwood, with Henry Hesson tossing two scores on the day as they limited their opponents to just 146 yards on the game, coming away winners 38-0. Starting quarterback Dequan Finn has 465 yards passing, two TDs and four picks. He missed their last game and is considered questionable.
Can Northern Illinois end their losing skid?
The Northern Illinois Huskies made a statement with an opening week win, but since then, they've struggled mightily, losing three straight games coming into this one as they look to get their season back on track at home. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they simply can't move the ball this season, averaging just 251 yards of offense per game, and as good as their defense has been, ranking top-50 in the nation in yards allowed and opposing QB rating, they just don't have the balance to be consistently dominant this season.
Northern Illinois relies on the run. They are averaging just 251 yards per game (135th) and 99.8 passing yards. Their running game isn't that spectacular, averaging 151.3 yards per game (79th). Quarterback Josh Holst is completing 59.7% of his passes for 376 yards with just one touchdown and two interceptions. Last week, however, they played in a very competitive, low-scoring contest against San Diego State, with just 179 total yards of offense on the day as they couldn't score after a first-quarter field goal, eventually falling in a tough outing 6-3.
Miami (OH) Redhawks vs. Northern Illinois Huskies pick
Moneyline pick for Miami (OH) vs. Northern Illinois
- Miami (OH) -4.5 (4 units)
While neither of these teams has consistently found their best this season, it's clear that Miami (OH) has been much more competitive on both sides of the ball, and after a 38-0 shutout win last time out, they come into this one full of momentum. Neither quarterback is that impressive so the offenses will need to be able to run the football. There won't be many explosive plays in this one.
On the contrary, Northern Illinois has struggled to move the ball this season, and while their defense is great, unless they can score points, they simply can't win, and that will end up costing them in this matchup against the Redhawks.
Over/under pick for Miami (OH) vs. Northern Illinois
- Under 44.5 (4 units)
These two teams matched up a season ago, and in a tight contest, it was the Miami (OH) Redhawks that came away winners, but in that one, there was a total of just 29 points scored as they picked up a dominant 20-9 win. Northern Illinois averages just 10.3 points per game to rank 136th in the nation.
For the Redhawks, the under sits at 2-2 this season, with a total of 17 points scored in their only two games played away from home in 2025, and for the Huskies, the under comes in at 4-0 this year, with a total of just 41 points scored in that time, including just three a week ago.
Keep it simple, take the under.
