The Michigan State Spartans travel to Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, to face the No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET. Michigan State heads into its biggest test of the young season against a Notre Dame team that has opened 2-0 and is coming off a dominant 52-0 victory over Rice. The Fighting Irish have followed their season-opening victory over Wisconsin by demonstrating just how overwhelming they can be when holding a significant talent advantage. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Be sure to check out our free college football picks for more NCAAF predictions throughout the season.

Michigan State Faces Its First Major Test

Michigan State enters South Bend with an opportunity to find out how much progress the program has made early in the 2026 season. The Spartans have had opportunities to establish their systems and build confidence, but Notre Dame represents a completely different level of competition. Playing a Top 5 opponent on the road will test Michigan State's ability to avoid mistakes and remain composed if the Irish establish an early lead.

The biggest concern is sustaining offense. Notre Dame completely suffocated Rice last weekend, and the Irish have enough depth to consistently pressure opposing offenses without compromising the rest of their defense. Michigan State cannot afford repeated three-and-outs because that would eventually allow Notre Dame's offense to overwhelm the Spartans through sheer possession volume.

Michigan State's best chance of covering a large number is slowing the pace and preventing explosive plays. The Spartans don't necessarily need to score into the 30s to provide betting value. They need to make Notre Dame work through longer drives and avoid giving the Irish short fields. If Michigan State can keep the game reasonably competitive through halftime, a large underdog spread becomes increasingly valuable.

Notre Dame Looked Like a National Championship Contender

Notre Dame couldn't have been much more impressive against Rice. The Fighting Irish won 52-0, built a 42-0 halftime advantage and completely controlled the matchup on both sides of the football. The offense generated 360 passing yards and 478 total yards while the defense forced four fumbles and recorded eight tackles for loss.

The shutout was particularly impressive because Notre Dame never allowed Rice to establish any meaningful offensive rhythm. The Irish held the Owls to only 64 rushing yards and used their defensive pressure to repeatedly create favorable field position. Notre Dame was also able to get extensive work for its depth after establishing such a massive advantage.

Michigan State should provide substantially more resistance, but Notre Dame has shown little reason to expect a major drop-off. The biggest betting concern is simply the eventual spread. Once the Irish are being asked to cover four touchdowns or more against a Big Ten opponent, the margin becomes less attractive because Notre Dame doesn't need to keep pushing once the outcome is secure.

Michigan State vs Notre Dame Picks and Prediction

Pick: Notre Dame -24.5 or Better

Take Notre Dame if the spread is -24.5 or better. The Irish have already demonstrated their ability to overwhelm inferior opposition and now remain at Notre Dame Stadium. Michigan State is a meaningful step up from Rice, but the Spartans will have difficulty consistently moving the football against a defense that just produced a shutout. I'll lay anything below four touchdowns, but the value becomes much thinner once the number reaches -28.

Pick: Under 54.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 54.5 or higher. Notre Dame could certainly score into the 40s, but Michigan State's best strategy will be slowing the game and limiting possessions. The Irish defense also has the ability to hold the Spartans below 20. A projected Notre Dame 38, Michigan State 13 produces a comfortable Irish victory while keeping the game below the target.

Final Picks: Notre Dame -24.5 or Better and Under 54.5
