Middle Tennessee opened its season with a 38-14 victory over Murray State in a game eventually called with 11:01 remaining because of repeated severe-weather delays. It was the highest-scoring performance of the Derek Mason era.

Roman Gagliano completed 76.9 percent of his passes and accounted for three touchdowns, throwing two and running for another. Cam'ron Lacy caught eight passes for a career-high 118 yards and a touchdown, while Antonio Martin rushed 15 times for 103 yards in his Middle Tennessee debut.

The Blue Raiders also produced a defensive touchdown when Kalen Woods returned a fumble 39 yards. Facing Marshall on the road represents a significant upgrade in competition, but Middle Tennessee at least enters with confidence and several encouraging offensive performances.

Marshall Tries to Rebound From Penn State Shutout

Marshall opened against No. 18 Penn State and was completely overwhelmed in a 45-0 loss. The Thundering Herd couldn't establish the running game or consistently create explosive plays against a talented Nittany Lions defense.

Carlos Del Rio-Wilson completed 17 of 25 passes for 102 yards and also led Marshall with 30 rushing yards. Toby Payne caught eight passes for 55 yards, but Marshall couldn't turn those completions into meaningful scoring opportunities.

The good news is that Middle Tennessee isn't Penn State. Marshall now returns to Huntington for its home opener and should have substantially more offensive success. The question for bettors is whether that improvement warrants laying more than two touchdowns against a Blue Raiders offense that looked sharp in Week 1.

Middle Tennessee +14.5 is my preferred side. Marshall should improve considerably at home, but laying more than two touchdowns with an offense coming off a shutout is aggressive. Middle Tennessee displayed offensive balance in its opener, with Gagliano completing better than 76 percent of his passes and Martin topping 100 rushing yards. The Blue Raiders don't necessarily need to threaten the outright upset to cash this ticket. Take Middle Tennessee +14.5.

Pick: Under 57.5

The Under 57.5 is my preferred total. Marshall still has major offensive questions after scoring zero points against Penn State, and Middle Tennessee's 38-point opener came against Murray State and included a defensive touchdown. Marshall should score significantly more at home, but reaching the upper 50s likely requires both offenses to be consistently productive. Something around 31-20 or 34-20 fits this matchup better.
