Mississippi State Has Already Proven It Can Win on the Road
Mississippi State has been one of the more impressive SEC teams through two weeks. The Bulldogs opened by overwhelming UL Monroe 62-13 before traveling to Minnesota and winning 38-13. Going into a Big Ten stadium and winning by 25 points gives Mississippi State considerably more credibility than a typical 2-0 start built entirely against overmatched opponents.
The Bulldogs also showed excellent balance against Minnesota. Mississippi State jumped ahead early and never allowed the Golden Gophers to seriously threaten the lead. Through two games, the Bulldogs have scored 100 points while allowing only 26, and the offense has demonstrated enough explosiveness to punish defenses that consistently lose field position.
Saturday is still a significant increase in difficulty because Williams-Brice Stadium provides one of the SEC's more challenging road environments. Mississippi State won't enjoy the same margin for error it had during its first two games. However, getting more than a field goal with a team that just dominated a Power Four opponent on the road is difficult to ignore.
South Carolina Has Dominated but Hasn't Been Tested Yet
South Carolina couldn't have handled its opening two games much better from a results standpoint. The Gamecocks shut out Kent State 57-0 and followed that performance with a 45-9 victory over Towson. They have therefore outscored their first two opponents 102-9 and enter SEC play with considerable confidence.
The question is how much those margins tell us. Kent State and Towson didn't possess the roster strength Mississippi State brings to Columbia. South Carolina now goes from playing two games where it owned overwhelming physical advantages to facing an undefeated SEC opponent that has already demonstrated it can execute successfully away from home.
Home field is the strongest argument for laying the points. South Carolina has been dominant defensively and gets Mississippi State at Williams-Brice Stadium. Still, a 3.5-point spread asks the Gamecocks to win by more than a field goal against a Bulldogs team whose early résumé is arguably stronger. That makes taking the points more attractive than laying them.
Mississippi State vs South Carolina Picks and Prediction
Pick: Mississippi State +3.5
Take Mississippi State +3.5. South Carolina deserves respect after allowing only nine points through two games, but Mississippi State's 38-13 road victory over Minnesota is the most meaningful result either team has produced. The Bulldogs have scored 100 points through two games and have already demonstrated that they can travel successfully. Getting through the key number of three makes Mississippi State the value side in what should be a competitive SEC opener.
Pick: Under 58.5
Take the Under 58.5. Both offenses have produced big numbers, but the defenses have been equally impressive. South Carolina has surrendered only nine points, while Mississippi State has allowed 26. Conference play should also create a much different environment from the mismatches both teams enjoyed early. A projected South Carolina 27, Mississippi State 24 keeps the game inside the spread while staying comfortably Under.
Final Picks: Mississippi State +3.5 and Under 58.5
