The NC State Wolfpack travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to face the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:45 PM ET. NC State enters at 1-1 after responding to a disappointing 34-8 loss at Virginia with an overwhelming 73-0 victory over Richmond. Vanderbilt provides a much stronger measuring stick after opening its season with a convincing defensive performance against Austin Peay. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. NC State's 73-Point Response Changes the Conversation

NC State's season could hardly have started worse. The Wolfpack traveled to Virginia and were beaten 34-8, immediately creating questions about an offense that generated only one touchdown. Instead of allowing that performance to linger, NC State returned home and demolished Richmond 73-0. The Wolfpack are therefore 1-1 while having experienced two completely different games.

The Richmond victory was obviously against an FCS opponent, so it shouldn't erase everything that happened against Virginia. It does demonstrate that NC State possesses enough offensive capability to punish an opponent when it creates favorable field position and consistently finishes drives. Through two games, the Wolfpack have scored 81 points and allowed 34, although those aggregate numbers are heavily influenced by the Richmond blowout.

Vanderbilt will provide the more useful evaluation. NC State now has to prove that the offensive improvement carries over against SEC competition and away from Carter-Finley Stadium. The Wolfpack cannot expect another avalanche of easy possessions, making third-down efficiency, red-zone execution and avoiding turnovers far more important than they were against Richmond.

Vanderbilt's Defense Creates an Interesting Matchup

Vanderbilt entered this stretch with confidence after holding Austin Peay to only nine points. That defensive performance becomes particularly relevant because NC State's offense has already shown two dramatically different versions of itself. If Vanderbilt can create the same kind of pressure Virginia produced, the Wolfpack could again find themselves struggling to consistently finish possessions.

Playing in Nashville also gives Vanderbilt an important advantage. NC State's only road performance so far resulted in the 34-8 loss at Virginia, while its offensive explosion came at home against Richmond. That contrast doesn't automatically mean the Wolfpack cannot travel successfully, but it does create enough uncertainty to favor Vanderbilt if the number remains manageable.

The Commodores don't need to score 40 points to control this matchup. Their cleaner path involves preventing explosive plays, making NC State sustain long drives and using home field to win the possession battle. If Vanderbilt can keep the Wolfpack from building early confidence, this should look considerably more like NC State's opener than its 73-point home performance.

NC State vs Vanderbilt Picks and Prediction

Pick: Vanderbilt -6.5 or Better

Take Vanderbilt if the Commodores are favored by -6.5 or less. NC State's 73-0 win was impressive, but Richmond and Vanderbilt present dramatically different challenges. The Wolfpack's 34-8 road loss at Virginia remains more relevant when evaluating how NC State might perform against a quality opponent away from Raleigh. Keeping the spread below the key number of seven makes Vanderbilt the preferred side.

Pick: Under 51.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 51.5 or higher. Vanderbilt's defensive performance and NC State's road struggles make a lower-scoring game more appealing than chasing the Wolfpack's 73-point outburst. NC State should offer considerably more resistance defensively than Austin Peay, while Vanderbilt should make the Wolfpack earn every possession. A projected Vanderbilt 27, NC State 17 supports both positions.

Final Picks: Vanderbilt -6.5 or Better and Under 51.5
